So I am finally getting around to buttoning everything back up after changing my rear tire. I thought I had cleaned out everything from the tray on my shop stool before I started. But now that I am finished, I found this stray nut. It is right at 10mm diameter and fits a 14mm wrench or socket. It is not chrome. The photo shows the same nut twice. 2001 Standard. I changed the rear tire from the center stand. Removed the seat. Removed the rear fender section. Removed the shocks. Raised the rear arm and removed the axle. Removed the brake caliper and changed pads. Removed the rear differential to clean and inspect the drive shaft splines (I did not remove the u-joint). Changed the tire. Changed the rear differential oil. Polished some parts, and put everything back together. I do not believe this nut is from the Valkyrie (I'm not even convinced it is metric--I could not get it to fit on a standard 3/8 bolt or a 10mm 1.50 but maybe it is 10mm by 1.25). Any ideas before I ignore it and ride?

Have you turned your shop stool over to see if one of the nuts that hold it together may not have fallen off?

Interesting suggestion. Just looked. It's not.

The only nut that I can think of right now on the rear is the 4 for the drive to drive shaft tube. But I thought it was smaller than 14mm, more like 12 or <.
I can't really confirm from the pics, but what color is it? It looks more black. Bike nuts are more of the oil tempered type. I would think it's not from the bike.

Exhaust mount stud nut?
Looks to clean to me for that, but that's all I can think of.

I have had one of my valks torn down to the frame and don't remember any nut that was black like the one pictured. I would go back and look at all removed and if it is from the bike it should easy to spot, but I don't think it is from the bike. JMHO.

I didn't notice if you have an IS, Tourer, or Standard. But on my IS when I added a HitchDoc I added a nut similar to that where my bag rail mount is. I needed to spread the rails out slightly to keep them from rubbing on the bags. I used the nut instead of 5 or 6 washers.

I rode to work today and everything seemed fine. I really cannot think of anywhere the nut could have come from. I am assuming it is from something else. Thanks for for the collective confirmation.

Looks just like the nut I found lying under my new grill the last time I cooked on it.

I'm not Vanagon, heck I can't remember the last time I stayed in a Holiday Inn but I'll bet those are Mick-O-Pegs your seeing. Had them myself, got rid of them after a few years. Didn't do a thing for me. Might be because of short legs? 28-29 inseam.

Yes, those are Mick-O-Pegs and Kuryakyn highway pegs. Installed the Kurys first and they did not do much for me. Installed the Mick-O-Pegs and I REALLY like them. Wish I would not have spent the money on the Kurys (but since they were already there, I left them).
And to be totally honest, my feet are on the OEM pegs at least 80% of the time.
