rode to work- temp light came on momentarily then off again on, off, then on. this happened 4 or 5 times in  a 30 mile distance. I couldn't smell over heating  issue as I rode. I just checked level of radiator is  OK - I syphon anti freeze solution every year off the rad and top back up keeping it clean and change overflow bowl also  and add 50 50 solution - I have a manual fan switch  also, in case needed at stop light.-the last few miles and arriving at my destination the light was off after a faster than usual ride- this is the first time I seen this light on???? any ideas thanks   fellow riders west = 98 std 125000  kilos

Sounds like a short in the circuit.
Trace the circuit and be sure there is not short and all connections are good.

It is located under the left side cover. I have no idea about the Wing, you would have to cross reference the part numbers.

My light came on the Other day stuck in traffic.  Problem is. It was hot. Had to jump out of the lane to breeze it out.  Light went off as soon as I got moving.  Oil temp was well over 200.

Something seems wrong to me. I ride all summer long here, sometimes it gets up to 125*. I've never had the light come on. The fan always keeps the temp down even sitting at a light. Granted we don't have much traffic.

yes fan came on ,today rode to get engine  warmed up and sat idling and fan came on and went off and light went out after I rode for 1/4 mile but the light had come on earlier while riding and went off  --on  'off  before I stopped to idle bike...wasn't scorching hot this morning weather wise ==however maybe my imagination but engine seems hotter running hard. i'm starting to think maybe change thermostat to 160  to be safe -seems a lot of work has anyone changed thermostat and have any hints or short cuts  and is it a  [ good idea ??]                  thanks  riders

Normally the fan comes on and cools the engine and cuts off. During this process the light stays off.
If the fan is not able to cool the engine and it continues to heat then the light comes on, indicating an overheat condition.
Or if the fan fails to come on then at elevated heat the light turns on indicating an overheat condition.

i hear you pete  but the light comes on when riding after a few kilos [10] then go's off.. its a on off situation and not regular, sort of when it feels like doing iast night when it was cool out it  fickerd on for 30 seconds as I rode, that was at 845 pm,a nice summer  evening =im thinking maybe the thermostat isn't opening far enough or as  stated  a short somewhere   thanks pete

All early (pre-2000) Valks do this. On mine it took 18 years to show up. As long as your fan still works, it is harmless. (A different sensor turns the fan on and off.) And since the part to fix the problem no longer is available there are three options:
(1) Replace the temperature sending unit on the lower radiator hose mount with the newer style and modify the wiring harness so that it works.
(2) Ignore the light. Once I learned the flickering is harmless the stupid light hasn't flickered since.
(3) Remove the bulb.

If the thermostat was not working properly the fan would be coming on.

This post is correct.  The 'indicator unit' on early Valks failed often.  Honda does not make the part any more.  You can update to the new temp sensor (which has the indicator unit built in) and make a jumper wire to bypass the old unit.  Or just ignore it.

up-date but first thanks  all for help -a great bunch here; in my 73 years I never had so much thankful help  as ive had here  with you all==I flushed  cooling system added  50/50,took res tank off partly =left bottom hose on=tried to un hook item 16 ''indicator'' ,,I needed three hands but I wiggled wires  massaged  and moved item  and sprayed a bit of WD on it ,started bike and top rad hose  got hot when I burped it ,so im getting circulation  ok -so - today [hot day ] rode for 20 miles /40kilos/ rad   fan didnt come on at stop lights and red   temp light didn't come on all the  time I rode ,,only time fan came on was opening garage door left it idling and by time im in garage fan was on =thats normal ,so hopefully I can find a indicator in a scrap bike yard ==again joining  this group was the smartest thing I did in my old age lol .. ?? how do you un hook that unit to clean it better or change it?? I don't want to break any wires or connections  ==thank you  to all ===if you all arn't the best ,,your better than the rest ==did I say that ?? ride safe all =west

I don't   want to break any wires or clips on this connection  SO?? do I squeeze in the holder clips  on the side -or-  pry those out then pull connection apart ??????? I'd hope to get another unit   some where or clean    this connection better  when apart  ,seems to me thank's to all I'm on the right track  = thanks  again   ride safe
