I am new to Valks and just got this bike so I thought Id bring this up.
My 2000 STD with only 11,000 miles has sort of a growl when I decelerate around 45-40 mph (I don't hear it at other speed though). It seems like a forward sound but
When I duck behind the windshield I don't really hear it and under acceleration its not there either. It seems more obvious if I am in to high of a gear and need to shift down.
Not sure if its anything really?

You're Ok, and stop worrying. And it is not a necessary thing to use the engine to slow down the bike.

Doing this deceleration practice is strenuous on the drive train and clutch parts unnecessarily so.

Use the brakes for what they were designed for. The Valkyrie has been among the best brakes in the industry.

Welcome!  It could just be your transmission whine--Valks have straight cut gears--sort of like a truck with two wheels  Grin. Check this out... http://www.rattlebars.com/valkfaq/#NOISE
