I have a contour light bar and it came with a 3 spade switch (see photos it has led on it) I want to use the resoviour switch pictured but it only has 2 spades (no led). Not sure what to do or which wire would go where now. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128097439@N05/sets/72157655814265849I would like to know how to hook it up. I have looked at the wiring diagrams at shop talk/chets but am still unsure so if any can explain it in simple terms your help would be appreciated. See link for photos of both switches and the wiring diagram that came for the 3 spade led swith. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128097439@N05/sets/72157655814265849

Eliminate the green wire. It is just ground for the light on the switch. You will have 12v wire to one side of switch and other side goes to terminal 86 on relay.

The green wire provides the ground for the indicating light on the switch. If the reservoir switches don't have lights, they don't need a ground wire.

Well I have it wired up just like the diagram (left off the green for led like suggested) and the lights are on even with the key off and wont shut off at all ! I have tested the switch with ohm meter and it seems fine, I have tested the relay an it seems fine but there is a terminal that is loose For a trigger I am using the wire under the right side cover, there are 2 separate wires there, one is green, I am using the other its white with a red stripe and has power when the key is turned. Here is a photo of them. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128097439@N05/sets/72157655814265849/with/19904174196/I have the lights ground wires hooked to the headlight bucket mounting bolt. What else can be wrong?? Suggestions needed.

I would try a different trigger wire and double check how you have the relay wired. If there is no voltage on the trigger wire with the bike off and your lights are still on something's wired wrong.

Mike if your going to use the acessory wire then it should have a lead to one side of the switch, then the other side of the switch would be wired to terminal 86 on the relay. The switch then will break the circuit when wanted. The only problem is if the lights are on when you start the bike it's putting that extra load on the battery. If the lights are off no problem. If the lights are on with the key off, somehow your powering those lights directly off the battery. Go back and check all your connection placements and power source. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. Been over this wiring 100 times...I must have a bad relay. I just drove 1 1/2hr round trip to get a new relay and when I got home I noticed the guy at autozone gave me a Flasher relay even though I told him it was for fog lights!!! @$$*&*&^& I am fit to be tired Could I just run the 2 black wires from the lights to one side of a toggle switch and the other side of the switch to the pos battery terminal?? Id shut off the switch when I park and turn it on after I start the bike. Or what if I ran it to the accessory wire and not the pos battery would that be better?

It's should be easy to check the relay just pull the connector off terminal 86 and make sure 85 is ground. Run battery power to terminal 36 and you should hear the relay click. With power to relay you should have continuity between contacts 30/51 and 87. With power off those contacts will show open. Where are you at Rounder, if your not to far i'd be glad to stop and look?

After driving back to return the flasher relay (always dbl check the guy behind the counter at autozone you probably know more than he does...) I got the right relay (at Napa) and it all works just fine. I have to say I was not impressed with the Big Bike Parts customer service rep I spoke with today nor their product. They would not send me out a new relay even though this one is obviously junk, their wiring diagram does not match up with wire colors etc...Ill buy a cobra for the next bike. Thanks to all who helped.

Make sure the wire from the relay to the lights is hooked up to Terminal 87 and NOT 87A. 87 is normally open and 87a is normally closed. Unless you have a relay that is normally open on both terminals and closes both when triggered.

In his diagram, it's a dual 87 bosch-style relay, N.O. (normally open). Shouldn't be a N.C. (normally closed). NC, NO notations are usually embossed on the relay. On dual 87's, there's no 87 and 87a output terminals, electrically speaking, and both output terminals are either ON or OFF together. I thought he might have gotten a NC dual 87. And that was why his auxiliary lights remained ON when power was taken of the relay's 86 trigger terminal. (screenshot)
