I just bought a new 2014. The dealer gave me a form recommending a oil change at 600 miles (at my expense). The manual recommends 4k miles or 6 months, then every 8k miles  or 12 months. Does the dealer recommendation make any sense, or is it just a ploy to get some more shop business?

There's a column on the maintenance schedule in the manual for 600 miles, but nothing seems to be recommended...

By the way, it's black and beautiful. It just turned 600 miles in the 2 weeks I've had it.

Thanks, Warren.

You'll get varying opinions....I like to change the oil and filter 3 times in 2K miles....in which is around every 6-700 miles...and then on a regular seasonal basis afterward...

It may be a bit anal...but my bikes have always run very strong and tight till the day I sell them...

Most will tell you to change the oil about halfway or so before 1K miles.

I usually change my oil around 300 miles regardless of what model.  I got lazy on the Valkyrie and changed mine at 1000.  It's really not a big deal.  Do whatever you're comfortable with.

Went with Honda's rec and changed my VTX  oil at 4k and I don't ride easy. Had zero problems with it. Now years back Honda rec changing at 600 miles. On the VTX my dealer said he didn't want to see it til 4k and that oil change was on him.

I'm wating till 4k, rumor has it we may have some kind of break in oil to start so if that's true then wouldn't changing it too soon minimize the benefits? Of course that being said the book says it's broke in at 300 so again it's up to you but most Hondas are bullet proof regardless.

Thanks for the input everyone. I decided to go with Honda's recommendation. Since they carry the  warranty on the engine, they must have considered this. I'll change it next spring, like I always do.

Thanks again, Warren.
