Keep the shinny side up and rubber side down!

Baton Rouge, La.

« on: August 17, 2015, 11:44:11 AM »

Riding a 97 Tourer that has 81k miles on it and has been
best bike I have ever owned. On way home from 700 mile
trip yesterday, I exited interstate for gas. When pulling
away from stop sign, I felt a jerk like tranny slipped out of
gear. Then there was this horrible gear grinding sound from I'm
not sure where. My girlfriend told me she heard a metalic
sound a few miles before and her right foot peg seemed to
vibrate a lot. Anyway, bike tries to move but then sounds
like it jumps out of gear and grinds. This happens in all
gears. I don't have a clue! Did a search on site but did not
find answer. Anyone out there have any ideas what I am
facing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Sounds like driveshaft/pinion cup failure.
When you take the driveshaft out you'll also get a good look at the drive splines and U-joint.
Not hard to fix.

Sounds like you lost the drive shaft and pinion cup. If not that a u-joint. I live in Mandeville and work on a lot of valkyries and also have a lot of parts on hand. I will pm you my phone number and you can call me.

Also could be the drive spline on the rear wheel, if they were not greased when the tire was changes.
When you remove the rear wheel it will be apparent what I am talking about. Splines that mate ther rear wheel to the drive unit.

If that is the case this means damage to the splines in the rear end also.

So it sounds like it's not even rideable?  If it is, I wouldn't. That was a pretty catastrophic failure that occurred to your U joint or driveshaft pinion cup or what.  You're going to want to get in there right away (That means pulling the rear wheel off and the final drive unit off) before going anywhere and see what happened. Otherwise you could really ruin the whole final drive/rear wheel.  Let us know what you find out.

My advice would be to take Dennis up on his offer.  He can help you figure out what is wrong and will probably offer more than advice.  It most likely is the u-joint or pinion cup splines.  Won't break the bank especially if you only have to buy the parts.

I agree, it sure is nice to have someone who has done the job before to lean on for advice. I remember some of the work he did on DDT's bike. He knows what he is doing.  Smiley

WOW! Thanks for all the fast input from all so far. Didn't expect this much feedback so soon. Think I'll drain rear end and check for metal debris. Not sure what path I'll take after that Undecided

Well there is no harm in that. But the likely problems aren't going to show up with that. It sounds like a pinion cup for sure and secondly possibly u-joint. Have you done maintanence on the rear yourself or had dealer do it ? If you have a bike jack you can take everything apart and at least find the issue. If you are not comfortable fixing it yourself you'll still be money ahead. I would give trout dude a call. He won't steer you wrong. Good luck on your bike  cooldude

Its a good idea to replace the rear drive fluid, but, you shouldn't find anything in the old fluid.

Pull the wheel, the 4 nuts, and jerk the rear end out of the swing arm...drive shaft will come with it. Pull the drive shaft out of the rear end (pinion cup) Your problem is likely there. If so, replace shaft and pinion cup. Not terribly expensive.

Check wheel bearings first.   Pull the wheel and feel the bearings for smooth operation with your fingers.  If all is well with the bearings.....move to check splines and further to the final drive and drive shaft if need be.   Reminds me of what my rear bearings did on a long trip, riding 2 up.

Just dropping an update on grinding gears. Got hooked
Up w/ Dennis today and changed out pinion cup and
driveshaft as several of you had suggested. Everything
went great and I'm back in Baton Rouge and rolling
again. Thank again for all the tips and feedback on
problem. Special thanks to Dennis (Trout Dude) for
his time and grave efforts to get me back on the
road. Hats off to him, he's good people. You were
right about him Thunderbolt. Don't know if you
remember me, but we met at Panama City at Thunder
Beach rally a few years back. My handle is trantony.

Great news.  Yes I remember you now that you've jogged my memory.  Been too many years since PCB though, we need to do it again.  To my knowledge I have not met Dennis but would love to shake his hand for helping not only you and Bruce but others as well.

First it was nice to meet trantony (LEON) for the first time at the Waffle House friday morning. After breakfast on to my house where we pulled the old girl apart  and I do mean WE. We found the driveshaft and pinion cup to be shot. here are some pictures

After we got her back together we took a shake down cruise to Morton's Seafood in Madisonville LA. We left there and did some more riding to make sure everything was right and tight. Man the people we meet on this board. Just down right good people. I had a great day (Glad Leon was there to keep me on my toes) and i'm looking forward to a long friendship and to ridding side by side again soon.
Thunderbolt Looking forward to meeting you also maybe one day soon. And Barry i will see you next week man. cooldude
PS Leon Thanks for Breakfast and lunch again and next time it's on me. cooldude
