Brenda and I are going to Shasta Lake in a few weeks for my Russell seat. We are going by way of Mammoth Lakes, Tahoe and then up and over to Shasta Lake as she really liked Mammoth Lakes when we went there before. I want to do a route that I haven't been on before on the way back. Anybody been on 36 before ? I was thinking of Platina Road to 36 to 101. Then the rest I've done before, down thru the Ave. of Giants and the drive thru tree at Leggett. Then down thru Napa and over to Stockton as she has an Aunt who just got diagnosed with lung cancer. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.  cooldude

Yes hwy 36 is a great road. We did that one a few years ago on the 3 volcano's ride.

Fires from just east of Platina to just west of Dinsmore along Hwy 36. Air space is restricted until Oct. 1, but could be extended beyond that. I haven't traveled on the stretch from Red Bluff to Hwy 101 for a few years, but at times there is a lot of log truck activity, and as I recall the pass gets pretty narrow at the top, if they haven't improved the road. Dave and some of the SoCal VRCC traveled on it since I was last there and would know better than me.....amigo rick

Whoa, thanks Rick. I didn't realize the fires were that close. We will be pulling a trailer with camping gear. I'm not sure I want to dodge log trucks with Brenda on back. Just windy roads without guard rails freaks her out. If we were dodging log trucks at the same time she might never ride again. crazy2 I really like riding with her, it's been great to share M/C trips after doing them by myself for 40 years.  cooldude any experience with the hiway 3 and 299 over to eureka. I would really like to take her thru the redwoods. It's been 30 years for me and probably 45 for her.

Now I remember where I read something about that road. cooldude Dave would you say it's tighter than the Devils Road that we  did last year ? I think that kind of road would be fine with a trailer.

299 from Redding to the coast is a good highway and a good route. There are fires along part of the route from just east of Big Bar to just east of Salyer. The air space is restricted till Oct 1. If the road is open this would be your best route to the coast. It's the one I would take, and have taken with my girlfriend and our Yorkie. Lots of history through that part of the Gold Country. Be sure to stop in Weaverville if you haven't been there.  Hwy 3 from Yreka, down through Trinity Center, and the Trinity Alps to Weaverville is good road, and a scenic ride. Hopefully the fires will be out by the time you depart, but worth checking before leaving for the coast......amigo rick

For me it was a good road and I don't remember any lumber trucks. It might have been on a weekend but not sure. We did have to wait a few times for construction where they stop traffic with a flagman. I would just wait and see what's going on up there and then make your decision. Ask around about the road conditions. If you can do it that would be a great trip and I don't think you would regret it one bit.

Sounds good. I'll wait till we get there and then ask the Russell people. I'm sure they are familiar with current conditions of 36 and 299.  cooldude

So speaking of asking the Russell people... I've been meaning to tell you on a somewhat trip related note; I think I recall you mentioned camping and the like on this run? In the Shasta/Redding area there was a place called Fawndale Lodge Campground (I believe) suggested by Russell that had cabin-kinda lodging as well as tent camping, a swimming pool, laundry, etc. in the immediate general RDL vicinity. Heck they even had some places that delivered food there. They also extended a discount on the stay based on the RDL referral. Just thought I'd mention it. Didn't mean to hi-jack.  Undecided

Have a great trip you two, hope that new seat works out well for you.

Thanks Gary. I knew I should have asked you before. I already reserved a couple nights at a place called Lakehead RV. Doesn't look near as nice as the place you stayed though.

I'm sure your place will be fine. The Fawndale was decent is all, not fancy.

This place was just up the same street from RDL, good for a breakfast stop.

If you do  get to take in Hwy 36, be prepared for lots of this...

And as mentioned, maybe some of this. I don't really remember logging trucks either but then,
I am forgetful.

Great pictures Gary, that was some good riding. Any bites to you selling your Interstate?

Thanks Dave! Yes it sure was, really enjoyed that trip.  cooldude

The Interstate remains bite-less so far.
