Obama to rename Mt. McKinley to 'Denali' during Alaska trip that focuses on climate change

In 1896, a prospector in the mountains of central Alaska named the range after William McKinley upon learning that he had been nominated as a candidate for U.S. president.

McKinley became the country’s 25th president and was assassinated six months into his second term

So he is not really changing the name but just restoring the original name of "Denali"

I have no problem going back to its original name, most of the state of Alaska is in favor of the change from what I have read.

I do.  It's just more hysteria to generate support for his favorite agenda.

I would say nothing of the sort; people are polarized about Obama.  And 1/2 of the polarization is about who he is, not what he does.  Let's be honest here.

You could be correct, I can't speak for those who like or don't like him for who he is,   I don't agree with most of what he's done.   Not sure which half that puts me in.

Well at least I can say I agree with him on one thing. Alaskan's (native) named it a long time ago, never should have been renamed. No one in Alaska calls it McKinley.

In this specific case, the President is doing what any politician would do.
The name change has been decades in the making with support from across the aisle. This, as the report said, is the final phase of the process.
He's using the occasion to further the "green" agenda which will be strongly rebuffed in Alaska.

Pretty sure the Alaskan folk can take care of themselves without Barry's help.

Yep.

His "Green Agenda" was being discussed on Meet the Press this morning.   Was an interesting discussion.

All right Kids...

Once again a bit of misinformation.... This has been going on for years.... and the state of Alaska was the one pushing the agenda....there was a also recent bill to change the name in congress,,

"Mount McKinley is commonly referred to by its Koyukon Athabaskan name Denali, especially by Alaskans, mountaineers, and Alaska Natives. In 1975, the Alaska Board of Geographic Names changed the name of mountain to Denali[7] and, at Governor Jay Hammond's behest, the Alaska Legislature officially requested that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, the federal governmental body responsible for naming geographic features in the United States, change the name of the mountain from Mount McKinley to "Mount Denali.""

This has been going on for years and the funny thing is that it is Senators from OHIO that have been blocking it because OHIO is the birthplace of McKinley... The Alaskans couldn't get their OWN mountains name changed because of OHIO.... LOL

President Obama is announcing that the Department of the Interior and US Board of Geographic Names will now also call it "Denali"

Yes he is using his executive power to make this happen, mainly because he is going to Alaska to get nice and talk Climate Change..... and solve something that has been wasting time in congress for years... Actually the people of Alaska get something they actually want out of him...

But he didn't just decide " I'm gonna change the name for the hell of it"

Maybe you are right and I am just a dumbass. So can you explain to me how this is hysteria ?And how this is furthering an agenda ? Also I didn't take your statement as an insult. Evidently you guys are seeing something I don't get. I just don't see how the name change helps him.

While there are most likely many hidden reasons, he's giving them something they want building some good will while, he does something else they don't like furthering his agenda.   Alaskans are not in his court when it comes to most  of his "green" policies.    He appeases some while pissing off some.

Furthering his agenda.   Can I explain any thing else he does, no.   Most of it makes no sense to me.    While we may not agree on many things, I never considered you a dumbass, just misinformed.   Wink

Well now. I see the problem. The premise is completely wrong to begin with. Alaskans are NEVER going to be in his court. Alaskans are very libertarian on the whole. We have plenty of inconsistent ideas but we are fiercely independent and will not be wooed by something like this. Politicians have to buy us the old fashioned way like Ted Stevens did. Obama will never come close to pushing any kind of "Green" agenda that Alaskans will get behind for a multitude of reasons. The one unifying theme you will find is that "We don't care how you do it Outside". No foreign born Muslim stands a chance in hell .

I would say nothing of the sort; people are polarized about Obama.  And 1/2 of the polarization is about who he is, not what he does.  Let's be honest here.

I didn't see where that was said or implied.

But, I personally don't appreciate anyone who thinks they know how to spend my money better than I do.   I personally don't appreciate anyone who wants to increase my taxes just so they can have give away "entitlement" programs.   Whether or not you, I, or anyone else works hard has little to do with it.   I don't appreciate anyone wanting to give anything to someone who hasn't earned it.

Changing the name of this mountain will appease some but, it won't change anything except what's written on the maps.

We only see the perspective he wishes us to see and are not allowed to see way too many things about this person.   I won't say he's foreign born, that has not been proven, I won't say he's a Muslim, that has not been proven.   I won't say he's a Communist, that has also, not been proven.

But, as the old saying goes, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...............

Well, you know where this is headed.    Nope, can't say I trust him.

If Obama came out in favor of air, conservatives would hold their breath...hhmmmmmmm. I sense an opportunity.

That is totally bogus.

Obama would tax the working folks for it then give it away to his lazy constituents and illegal immigrants. crazy2
Yes we all know it's only the conservatives that work hard. The rest of us are just lazy.  Roll Eyes
