Over the weekend I did the Redeye Shiny Desmog Kit Version 2. Everything went fine and the Bike runs great however I have noticed on deceleration and Idle there sounds like more popping. I'll mention that I DID NOT replace the intake manifold O rings. Should I have?. Is this slight increase in popping normal after a desmog or should there be less or none to speak of?

I also encountered an issue as I have the Kurakyn Spark Plug Valence Covers. On the left side one  (when you sitting on the bike) the very front intake manifold bolt which holds the valence cover in place as it was being tightened broke a piece of the chrome cast cover. Any ideas why? Was I suppose to shim something ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gerry

Prior to my desmog it popped and farted a LOT.  2funny After the desmog it STILL pops and farts but no where near what it used to did!  Roll Eyes After my brother digisynced my carbs a bit more of the popping and farting went away. It STILL pops and farts but not a lot. Hope this helps ya some what!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

There should not be any popping after a desmog.

Have you checked for air leaks at the plugs you installed? From the site of your kit " Each white teflon bracket pad can be adjusted for pressure on the plug, by inserting one stainless steel shim. Most bikes will not need these shims, but who knows, maybe yours does."

Do you still have the #6 vacuum line to the stock petcock? is it new?

And if all those items are ok and the bolts or rubber nipples you put on the intakes are air tight then Yes you probably should have replaced the intake O rings.

I am assuming your popping is new to your ride after the desmog.

Jim,

On deceleration my bike popped a bit but i never remember any popping on idle. Like I said the popping on idle is very minor but bugs me. The white pads your speaking of have more than enough pressure on the chrome plugs so I don't think that's the issue. The vacuum plugs on all five intakes went on snug as could be. The only plug I would have a question about is the plug supplied with the kit that plugs up the large intake in the back left underside of the air box.

I also noticed and I don't think it's my imagination but the sound of my exhaust seems different since the desmog. Did anyone notice that as well or is it just me? Cheesy

Jim you talked about a digisync of some sort on the carbs? Where did he get that at?

Bon-s manufactures and sells the digisync. He advertises here on he board-usually a banner ad at the top of the page. Look him up and P M him. Good guy to know and ride with. RIDE SAFE.

Did you tighten the plates supplied to cover the exhaust ports on the underside of the engine?  Are the headers sealed well to the block. I agree with others comments. The Digi-sync is a great tool.

It shouldn't 'pop' more after the desmog.  It may 'pop' some/little especially if the exhaust has modified.
So it sounds as though there is something wrong. But, I'm not familiar with that desmog kit, I don't use it. It sounds as though its still drawing air from somewhere on decel.

Re-check the exhaust bolts for proper torque. Go back over your work and re-check it physically , do not just look at it.  The Digi-sync from BonS is a quality piece of equipment. I just sent mine back to him as he has updates he installs. I have done several de-smogs and carb syncs.  When all carbs do their equal share of the work , you will notice it right-a-way.

Old2soon thanks much for the link for Digisync. I think it's time for me to get one. Awesome.

Da Prez here's my plan. I've order six new manifold intake o'rings which I didn't replace as well as six exhaust gaskets. I plan on dropping the exhaust on each each and using the bolts that came with the Redeye's desmog kit on the block off plates on the underside on each side where the chrome tubes went into. I installed the graphite washer and plate which the original 5mm Hex head screws because I could get a ball headed Allen wrench on them without removing anything except the engine guards. I'm not able to torque them all that tight with the Allen wrench so my thought was to go back and install them bolts supplied with the kit.

I did in fact torque the exhaust bolts the specific torque of I believe 7 foot lbs according the the shop manual.

I'll go back and check everything out again. I suspect that replacing the intake o'rings and re-syncing my carbs should help eliminate most if not all of the popping. Like I said it's not terrible but it is something I know I can correct.

Thanks to everyone on the forum for their input. It's always very much appreciated.

I would doubt your intake o-rings are leaking, but, anything is possible. Just spray around with some ether [ start fluid] to check them.
You didn't block off the exhaust ports ? You mentioned not doing the bottom ones. What did you do with the other ends ?
If the desmog is not completely done then I would expect some decel popping. Exhaust gaskets that are leaking can also cause it and they can be stinkers to get to completely seal.

Patrick,

Here is what I mentioned in my prior post. I did in fact block off the exhaust ports.

"I installed the graphite washer and plate which the original 5mm Hex head screws because I could get a ball headed Allen wrench on them without removing anything except the engine guards. I'm not able to torque them all that tight with the Allen wrench so my thought was to go back and install them bolts supplied with the kit."

Thanks for mentioned it again though. It never hurts.. Appreciate it  cooldude
