Do you need to remove the petcock from the tank to replace the parts that come with the cover set?

Yes. It is trivial. You need to take the tank off too...

Whenever I post this link, which I like, another guy name Lee, who doesn't
like it, posts a bunch of other good pictures and instructions... the test
described in this link is very helpful at ensuring that you put the
petcock back together right.

There's no complex stuff about removing the tank, but it is cramped
and kind of awkward...

great thread. also see my post about using a snubber in the vacuum line. Over 30k and zero problems. Thank God
