One more turn should do it!

Kent, Ohio

« on: September 13, 2015, 05:36:03 AM »

Few questions, I finally got around to putting carb bank back together. Fuel rails were leaking etc. Project started in May '15 getting close to completion. I obviously procrastinated as well as every time I needed a part it was another week. Thought I had everything I needed. Silly me, but mostly I became intimidated by the job. Anyway spent a few hours yesterday putting carbs back together. Went smoothly and enjoyed doing it. Maybe today get them back on the bike. This lengthy time period has my memory rather sketchy but, I did take a ton of pics. This is what paralyzes me, I think rather than do! Hoping to ride a little in Sept and Oct before I store her for winter. Wondering if there is anyone in NE Ohio that syncs carbs? Thinking about a Digisync, don't think its in the budget right now. I did not change(adjust) anything on the carbs. Except I did change the low speed mixture screw settings. I noticed and recorded there initial set points and they were all at various points. I remember reading I should set them each at 2.5 turns out from seating points. So I am already worried bike will not run yet, don't have carbs on the bike. Figuring it will need to be synced!

Is there a question ?
I prefer the setting of 2.25 turns. But, 2.5 shouldn't make much difference.
Sync. I just use a single plain ole vacuum gauge. I use an old one that has a damper adjustment. The damper is needed, so, if one doesn't have it then  forceps or an aquarium valve would work in its place.

If you still have your carbs on the bench I'd strongly put in new float needles. I haven't seen a bank of carbs that didn't need them after all these years. A few folks here have suffered hydrolock damage and I'm convinced that float needles are a root cause. About $25 will get you all six. If you didn't take the rack of carbs apart then your sync will certainly be good enough to get you going again. A simple vacuum gauge is inexpensive and is good enough when it fits your budget. A better tool is preferable.

"What we have here is, a failure to communicate". Bon, I did replace all the float needles. While dis-assembled, notices they were rather weak. One of the reasons for another week waiting on parts.
Yes I did have carbs separated. Had to replace all the o'rings along the fuel rail.
I have never synced carbs in my life. That's why I was hoping to find someone nearby to sync carbs. First time in my life I have ever worked on carbs on any bike I've owned.

Great! If you've gotten this far then you should have little trouble getting it the rest of the way. You can do a bench sync by looking closely at the butterfly of each carburetor. It covers about 1/2 of a small hole. Compare the amount of the hole coverage against carburetor #3, make any sync adjustments to get them the same, and you'll be good to go.

I find that getting the carb rack back onto the bike is a little mysterious. It won't go in - and then it does. Kinda' like getting the alternator back in!

The rest is simple. After reassembly just ride to Kansas City and I'll be glad to sync you up!

You can mechanically synchronize the carburetors while they are on the bench. Many owners have done this

and report a very successful outcome. Results up to where more synchronization is unnecessary.

I did a mechanical sync on my last carb project before I used the Digisync to fine tune them. Only 2 of the 6 carbs needed very minor adjustments, wouldn't even have noticed it had I not used the Digisync.

I'm gonna repeat what I've already stated before-the Digiync brings 6 mechanical beasties as close to operating TOGETHER as humanly possible. My butt dyno tells me this my fuel M P G tells me this and the fact that high speed-over 90 M P H-roll ons no longer have that minor/slight hesitation. Rolling up I-44 yesterday at 3600-3700 R P Ms and still averaging a tick or 2 above 30 M P G. Plus I was experiencing a really NASTY cross wind. My brother-da prez-has a Digisync and a set of carbs rebuilt by Atticrat while needing a minor sync-Bob KNOWS Valkyrie carbs-To bring the into the point one range-Digisync gets you there-point one. Do you need Digisync-maybe not-BUT BonS has graciously offered to do the sync-sides=from Ohio to K C-ain't really THAT far!  Roll Eyes Myself and another old gear head were talking and I splained the Digisync and the first thing he mentioned was a gas cope running 6 carbs-how much faster would he have been with Digisync?? We will NEVER know. Also remembering my friends 348 Chevy with tripower. Damn I'm ittin old!  2funny RIDE SAFE.
