Has anyone ever had the oil seal go bad on the output shaft or the o ring? My brothers bike that we fixed a hydrolock on last summer is now leaking oil out of this area. We cleaned it all up and rode it a few miles and determined this is where it was comimg from. So now our plan is to remove the rear end driveshaft and u joint to get the cover off and replacethe seal and o ring. I have not read anything about this before so it must not be that common.

Did you replace the seal when doing the hydro-lock repair?   With the age on these bikes now anytime something like that gets disturbed it can start leaking, a good idea to replace it.

If you did replace it, a chance you nicked it during the install over the shaft?   Did you put a little grease on the seal lips?

Check the bolts holding the cover over that shaft/seal (three I think).    I know of a leak caused by one of those bolts not being tight.   You may be able to check those bolts without having to pull the rear-end down.

It's an easy fix. All the ones I've seen failed had the little seal spring off the lip (bent lip over during install).

We did not replace it during the hydrolock fix. Got the seal and o ring ordered. Talked to Trout Dude last night and he said if oil is inside the boot it's the seal, if outside the boot its the o ring. I think it may just be the o ring but got both just to do while we are at it.

May want the boot too. Oil softens them up quickly and they are not expensive.

Did you clean the drain holes in the drive shaft.
