Ok so this happened...

Today I rode my bike for lunch from work. I knew I was low on gas but not yet in the reserve. I was cruising on the highway (don't ask it was a long trip to lunch) when I got the tell tale rough running telling me it was time to throw the switch. I switched to reserve and continued to lose power until the bike died. I pulled off the highway and tried to get her going again and after some prodding She lit up but just loped at about 500 rpm. after some time it picked back up and away I went...To the gas station.
On my old Shadow when I hit the rough running indication I would switch to reserve and let off the throttle for a few seconds and away it would go so this took me by surprise. I have hit reserve before but I guess I got the indication earlier on the previous occasions.
So the question is WTF? Is that normal?
This bike has the Dan-Mark fuel valve AND the OEM Petcock still using Vacuum.
Thoughts?

OEM Petcock has a pinhole in diaphragm. Replace or get the rebuild kit and install that which is what I did with the same symptom. And mine (99 tourer now my daughter and son-in-law's) was leaking out the weep hole which pretty much confirmed the problem.
Anyhoo, it would seem that on the occasions I would hit reserve the time it took to recover seemed to get longer and longer and once to the point of nearly not recovering. Always filled before reserve then the weep hole leaked and installed the kit. (Well, had my mechanic install it and some other maintenance too)
Now it recovers almost instantly.

I have a few bits an pieces coming from Redeye that should arrive on Monday. I picked up a bunch of Grommets today to replace the worn ones on my body panels so I have that to do as well. Looks like next weekend will be the "take stuff apart" weekend.
New intake o-rings
New Petcock Vacuum Line
New Cover Set on Petcock
Replace Panel Grommets
Hopefully after its all back together I can get the carb synch checked.

Yeah nine times out of ten I refill before I get to reserve, but the times I have hit reserve it behaves exactly like if I drive away without turning the petcock on--it starts running rough, I reach down throw the switch and she perks back up almost instantly. Probably what happened to you is there was some trash in your tank that got in there and momentarily plugged that reserve pipe/hole and then eventually cleared itself.

To get it running again, did you mess with the petcock dial? Turning it on/off/reserve again? My thought was when you went to reserve, you missed the indicator and wasn't really on reserve. Just a 2nd possibility.

The tank is clean and no crap in the screen. It was also firmly in the RES detent. It just took a LONG time for the fuel to get to the fuel rail and fill the bowls. I have ordered a new Cover Set (on Back order until Nov 3). In the meantime I will convert it to a Manual Setup by moving the spring. Then I will see how that works.
