I'm having a common problem right now with my '99 Interstate. The stock fuel petcock is leaking fuel when turned on. I've read a lot on this forum that say the OEM petcocks are crap and swear by Pingel.  I'd like to find out if there are any other vacuum petcock options that you guys are using. I dislike the idea of having to shut off my gas every time I stop the engine. I'm doing it now, but I'm not known for my unfailing memory and I'm concerned that I will drain my tank overnight sometime.

What are the cons of a Pingel vacuum petcock? Or any others for that matter.

My take---I just bought a new factory one for some $77 on ebay--my original stock one lasted 14 years and 52K miles-my bike was running out of gas at 80 mph in a mile or two--i read something about the little ball getting stuck in there somehow in the shut off valve-I rarely turned the  valve at all--a rebuild kit for the stock one is $30 on ebay....it seems that if a tiny tap 1-3X of the starter to make sure no hydrolock has occured seems to prevent the damage and then  spark plug removal and spin of the motor followed by an oil change is the cure..of course the float getting stuck in the first place seems to be either debris hanging it up--the float--or a factory  defect with the float getting stuck on something inside the carb

Question, do the OEM petcock valves ever have issues? The diaphragm side is the normal issue i'm aware of.  If it leaking fuel from the vent, then I assume it's the cover set needs to replaced, not the entire petcock.

Question is if you change it out for a vacuum operated Petcock why not just go back stock?

Petcock went bad the day I purchased the bike in 2011.  Replaced the diaphram and all is well.  I keep a repair kit ($35) with me.  If it leaks on one side it drips on engine.  If it leaks on the other side it drips into engine.  My leak was filling up the crankcase.  No issues since the repair.  Still carry the repair kit.  From some Val owners I have heard that if you go Pingle you lose the reserve so when it runs out you're OUT.

Wow, that's a long time on an OEM petcock.  I wouldn't get too far away from home if I was you.   Cheesy   A little kidding there, but Even though yours has lasted doesn't mean it cant have problems, chances are after a repair or replacement, you wont repeat that good fortune.

Anything CAN have a problem but I wouldn't hesitate to ride across the country again for the third time without carrying a replacement. coolsmiley

+1 on a stocker.
They are about $100 new on Partzilla.  1st thing I did on my Valks.
Been riding maybe 50 years, so turning the petcock off is about as much as a habit as going to the john when I get up in the am... Grin

But I swear, every couple months I'll be doing something...different, and I forget.  It seems to be whenever someone comes up and wants to chat when I am getting off the bike.  That's where the vacuum saves your butt.  I hope.

The second thing on each bike was rebuilding the carbs; so hopefully that avenue of doom is deferred as well.

Once a week I still check the petcock.  Fill up the tank on Friday coming home and intentionally leave the petcock off.  So far, so good.  And it ALWAYS runs out as real near the donut shop down the road.

The 1000, 1100, and 1200 wings all had fuel pumps, as their tanks were under the seat.  Fuel pumps were always an issue; I still carry one with me on my trips on the GL1200.  But their failure seldom grenaded an engine...

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

You don't loose your reserve. Reserve is less, but your main is longer. Still go the same distance on oem or Pingel.

I use a pingel.

Ah I see, “you have the same mileage capacity” but simply ride much longer before needing to switch to reserve......but reserve is half of what it was?

I went to the Pingle the first time I had issues. Back to old school for me turning off and on manually. You can add to the tube height of the Pingle. It is 3/8 copper if you can solder? After installing the Pingle I ran it till I had to go on reserve while watching the trip odometer. I always reset the trip odometer with each fill up. You should know how many miles per gallon your scooter gets anyway. Common sense here guys. It's all personal preference.

FYI, if I ever have to remove the Pingle I need to add a little more to the tube if I want to get back to stock reserve amount.

Going with the Pingle I did add an in-line fuel filter.

Good luck all no matter what decision you make.

If you are concerned with forgetting to turn it off, install a Dan Marc fuel shutoff.  Wire it to the ignition circuit and it's off when the bike is off.  $30 for peace of mind.

I prefer to stay with the stock "type" petcock set up, has anyone used any of the kits available on Ebay, and if so thoughts and experiences?

I've never had to replace the complete petcock, but the first one looks identical to the OEM.

There are 3 ratings but only 1 shows for me and it's the positive one.  I'd like to read the 1star one.

Can't imagine there are more than one manufacturer of those, but maybe.

The second one is different than OEM and looks like you won't be able to fit the OEM valve switch.

From another thread.
Remove the petcock and replace with a Honda v65 electric fuel punp.
It is small low pressure and turns off and on with the switch.
NOTE: there would be no reserve so set the odometer.
