Going to tackle the standard de-smog this weekend (98 Tourer).

While I am at it and have the air box off I am installing a Dan-Mark electric shut off, replacing the vacuum line to the petcock, and I have a petcock re-build kit.

I also have new O-rings for the intakes--is it easier getting the airbox back together with the intakes removed?

Just took delivery of a lift adapter that I can install prior to any of the above mods.  For those of you that have already de-smogged, is the process aided by raising the bike, or is it best to leave it on the kick stand?

Anything else I should do during this process.  I am also replacing the air filter.  20,000 miles on the clock and I have no idea if the AF has ever been out.  It had 17000 when I got it.

I'll try and take some photos, but I know there has been tons of stuff posted about everything I am doing.

I didn't have mine raised when I did the desmog. I don't see any reason to. I think you will need the intakes on to install the air box. For me using a ratchet strap and small block over the air box really helped. I don't remember who posted that trick but you can find it in a search. Take your time and you'll be fine. Are you using a desmog kit or doing it old school ?

I raised mine just because it's a bit easier if you don't have to bend over so much.  My back appreciates that. I didn't need a desmog kit on either bike.  You can close off the pare lines by folding them over and crimping them with a vise-grips.  Except for #1 which is harder to reach.  Plug that one with JB Weld on a piece of a bolt - forgot the size. Close off the nipples by putting silicon glue inside a piece of the vacuum line.  Easier to put the airbox back in if you use a ruler or the like to push the carb inlets over while lowering the airbox. I made my petcock strictly manual with the mod recommended by the belly tank folks.  I can scan and post it here if needed. No more vacuum lines.

Thanks for the replies.  I was going to do the de-smog as shown on shop talk (I think) page--not using a kit.  I have bought 14mm freeze plugs, made the alum blank plates and purchased new fuel line/vacuum line/brass fittings for the fuel valve.

Sounds like you have it under control  cooldude

Can't argue with that logic. Especially someone who has worked on as many as you have.  cooldude

Why de-smog does it improve gas mileage, engine performance.

Nope.  It eliminates a maintenance issue.  And if your vacuum lines are already leaking - well it takes care of that now and forever.
