Ya never know how many good Summers ya have left.

Well.... on our trip.. and stoping for gas and swiping the card at the pump is evidently not a good idea.... The Visa card is showing $500 plus charges that we did not make.... even at the current exchange rate to the Canadian dollar...That Ain't Right....I always thought swiping the card was better than having paper copies floating around the station for any minimum wage type to latch on to....
WELL>>>>>>
$115.24 to fill up a 5 gallon tank.... have the receipt.for $12 ..several hits like that.... all at places we stopped for gas. Called and had to cancel the card.....
Now we are running mostly on cash. hate to use our other card. if it goes FUBAR we are out of luck.

Visa was supposed to have an emergency card waiting for us at the hotel in Halifax today..... got a call from them tonight, it will not be here till MONDAY.... we won't be here. Told them to not send it till I could let them know where we would be.
We will be OK.... just a pain in the butt. Especially when we get home and have to dispute the charges.
The only good thing is, we were getting out of country notifications via e-mail on all of our transactions. the notifications of the out of line transactions are still not posted to our account.....hopefully we were able to nip it in the bud.
Cash is good... just a pain in the butt...literally....when yer billfold is where your butt should be on the saddle....

Check you bank statement online if you can, i think you will see for every transaction they took an extra 50 or 100 dollars and freeze that amount as a pending transaction, once they get their money they cancel the pending transaction for the held amount of 50 or 100 dollars.  Don't know how they can do that but it happened to me on a trip. Took about a week before all the money was available again.  Somebody in credit and banking could explain it.

You also need to check with your credit card company.  Most cards now charge a 3 to 5 percent surcharge on all out of country purchases.  That can add up quick if your in Canada buying meals and motels and such.

Most people don’t know this, but, every time you use your credit card at one of those “pay at the pump” gas stations, the card number is transmitted threw the air to the receiver inside the gas station cash register modem.  Anyone that knows how to “catch” this transmission knows how to make a false card with your number on it!  They go shopping, the credit card company pays the bill!

I personally always pay at the pump, and I never give it a thought!  Hopefully I’ll never get caught by a networking theif!!

I had this happen before but it ended up that there was a "preapproval" for fuel amounts - when you slide the card at the pump they withhold authorization for some amount - usually $150 on a pickup and then when the transaction is completed the credit card company backs the authorization out for the actual amount.  These preapproval amounts showed up in a separate section of the staement than the transaction amounts for that particular card.

Just as a sidenote if you are fuelling up in BC (province just above Washington State) they have a law that all transactions must be prepaid before you start fuelling - basically you either pat at the pump, give them cash ahead or leave a charge card at the till.  This law came about as a direct result of a young fellow that was an attendant at a service station near Vancouver getting run over and killed after a "gas and dash" - something that became quite popular a few years back when the price of fuel went way up.

ATM's are available everywhere and US currency is widely accepted  although merchants may not give an advantageous exchange rate but any bank will pay that days rate.

The first time I went to TNT's (on my Valk) above Chattanooga from New Orleans, I was using my card every time I stopped for gas.  By the time I got there, the card had been shut down.  Apparently, the card company thought the card had been stolen due to the frequent small charges leading out of state.  I had cash enough but, it sure ticked me off.

I know they will hold out extra for a debit card... but not for a credit card.  the credit card company couldn't tell me what was going on... so I claimed fraudulent card use, and had it shut down.  Everytime we used the card in Canada, we would get an email from the card company with the amount within 2 hrs of the charge.  The charges were all correct..... up until a gas stop in Sudbury..... then we started getting WAY out of line charges...at places we did stop.... seems strange...
Really don't think it is a Canada thing..... We have had a great trip and have seen beautiful country with very friendly folks!!!!!
whether it's a thief, or a card company foul up..... we have it stopped!!
My bet at this point would be a credit card company screw up.

On my trip to InZane my Amex card was cut off after the second gas station. My Discover was pulled a little later. I called them and each transaction was getting a pre-approval for about $80 and the CC companies couldn't "see" that I was only buying about 6 gallons at a time for the bike. They can only see the actual amount when the business closes the "batch" which concludes all transactions that happen over a business day. It's no wonder that things look suspicious from their point of view as it looked like I was filling up every couple of hours! Of course, the final bill only showed the actual gas charges at each station.

Make sure you have your cell phone number in your credit card information that way if you are traveling, etc.  they can contact you if they see an issue before you are locked out of your card.  It's happened to me many times before but they always contact me and cleared it up that day.  I always thank them for calling.  Its a hassle but better than the alternative.

It wasn't over the limit. It wasn't even that phantom drafting that they do and undo. It was because I was to far from home...on the way back.

I still don't know why the hotel, meals, and gas in Key West didn't flag me, but apparently it was the fuel stops on the way back? Because according to the credit card company (which I called) they stopped the card as soon as they saw the problem.

I asked if they could see where I bought gas in Ashville, NC? yes. The campground for two nights and the charges in/around Inzane. yes. Could they see gas stops in...and I worked my way down the east coast. yes. Those were fine. Key West? yes. Then why did a gas stop on the way home cause a flag...well, that looked out of the ordinary.

How? I had to get home.

They kept asking me if they could put me on hold (I was on a cellphone by the pump). Well, no. I didn't want to be on hold my phone was dying. On a trip, credit cards can be a pain.

I seldom use CC's for trips.  Maybe only hotels.   On seperate occasions, both wife and I have been nailed with bogus charges, when we used our cards at gas stations.  Guess they can make a duplicate copy of your transaction inside with all your data.   Someone got free carpet and dinner with wifes card and someone across the US ordered about $800 worth of toys shipped overnight from mine.

Was a pain, but got it resolved and new cards issued

Card companies are really tightening up. My visa company has, I don't blame them. I bet they get stuck with some hefty bills. We all pay for it through higher interest rates. My wife's card was pirated once. She still had the card but someone got the info off the card. The lowlifes did some quick Sunday shopping maxing out the card. They caught the woman on tape, someplace in Michigan that we've never been. Didn't hear what happened to her. I'm sure not much.

I now call the card company and tell them my itinerary. They track it by the states I tell them I'll be in. Works out very well. I don't like to carry a lot of cash, so if my card gets hijacked I'm screwed.

When I was on the Iron Butt the other day with all those gas stops paying at the pump, Visa got suspicious and automatically shut down my card at the pump. I had to pay inside the store with my Visa. They do this as a precaution. Not a bad idea..but sometimes it can be a inconvenience.
Credit Card fraud can happen anywhere. Its a good idea to keep track of your statements online.

Good to hear that you and FB will be OK.  I have had that happen to me about 4 times in the past 10 years, but mine have all been over the internet.  I have never heard that about the pay-at-da-pump.  Good thing you have enough cash to get back home.

Don't come home this weekend, it's coming a frog strangler for the next 3-4 days.  Y'all ride safe out there.

I had a card cancelled last year by the issuer when they said that the usage was out of the usual  - I was at home and my wife travelled to Vancouver on holidays.  They suggested that we notify them when we were traveling so they would expect it.  It was from a card issued from a US bank.  We have had 2 cards that the issuers have called us on and reissued in the past 8 months because the suspect the cards security has been compromised.  Fraud and thievery is rampant I guess - all the more reason to keep a close eye on your accounts.

Wife and I rode part of Canada in July. We called our credit card companies before we left home (Bristol, VA) and notified them of our travel plans. All went well, we received the appropriate exchange rate on our card purchases, and had no problems. I don't know if the prior notification to the CC companies made a difference or not..............but we had no problems.
