National Cycle has some nice shields. That is what I had on my 97 before the fairing.

Find a OEM windshield if you can. Mounts and coverage are by far the best. JMO

I have a 98 Tourer and a Clearview 17" shield, but of course that bike came with a shield and the Clearview uses the same hardware. I switch back and forth with the seasons as the OEM is bit taller. I also have an 89 Shadow 1100 (for sale) on which I installed a National Cycles windshield. Good product. Had to buy the mounting hardware separately from NC. Shield was $209 and the hardware kit was $99. Still on the bike--lucky buyer gets it.

Clearview makes a nice OEM replacement shield (need the OEM hardware). They are going to have a sale on black Friday.

Clearview is the only way to fly once you find OEM Honda hardware on here. Thicker, more substantial construction than the OEM Honda plastic. Two VRCC members have sold me used hardware and I've ended up with a total of three different size shields from Clearview - 17", 19" and stock 21.5" all mounted and ready to switch on and off the bike.
See if Clearview has any "blemished" shields. You won't even be able to find the imperfections and you can save some $$.
I'm 6' and I'm using the stock seat. The 19" shield is great for all but the coldest weather here in NY. I look over the top by about 2".
I go with the stock shield now that it's cold but I can barely see over the top. Also, the stock shield is about 2" wider than the shorter ones from Clearview.
Good luck.

If you don't have the OEM shield hardware to mount a Clearview shield, you might want to consider what Memphis Shades has to offer.

Menphis Shades, in my opinion are great. Their customer service is the best.

I'd like to get a windshield for my '97 any suggestions
Here is some info from a former discussion on the subjet. http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,78237.0/topicseen.htmlTha Valkyrie, Standard did not come with a windshield, but it was an option. Some places the Tourer Windshild was the given option, other places the National Cycle Windshield was the obtion. The Clearview Windshied is an Acryl make, more platics and lighter. The National Cycle Windshield is poly carbonate which is much more solid and strong. I had both in my garage to choose the right one and the Nationl Cycle won by far! Much better looking, but most of all, i feel polycarbonate gives much better protection because it's more solid. Do some research on Polycarbonate and on Acryl windshields before you decide! jmo

I've got a pair of National Cycle Switchblade quick mount windshields for Valkyries that are literally brand new right out of the box. I bought them a year and a half ago for my '97 Standard but before I could mount them an OEM windshield fell into my lap so I went that way. One of the switchblades is a shorty which I planned to use in hot weather, and the other is the same size as the stock OEM windshield. Once the hardware is installed you can remove and switch out the windshields without any tools in seconds. Very nice system. If you or anyone else is interested, call me at 858-922-3163.

The National Cycle Switchblade shields are very nice!! A few of us down here in Florida are running them. The hardware is first class and the shields are great looking. They come off in about 2 seconds. On in about 2 seconds. Great feature for cleaning the chrome the windshield normally hides or for those days you just want all the wind in your face.

I have a National Cycle windshield that WAS on my standard. Called to get a replacement "glass" for it. They no longer make one for it! I went with a Honda Tourer windshield with a Clearview glass for it. Very happy with it.

I installed a Slipstreamer 17" Classic but I had to fabricae 1 1/4" spacers to get the tilt I needed and drop down 5/8" to seal up the headlight gap do to the speedo/tach setup. Worked out perfect but from the factory as is, not. Final results, Very pleased @ $225 plus mod's. Spacers pictured:
