Been looking to pick up a Valk, since I had to get rid of my VTX after the divorce.
Here's my dumb question. Just below the radiator, what is that huge chrome piece of metal?
Also since the Valk doesn't have a side air intake like the VTX, how hard is it to change the air cleaner on the beast of an engine?

That's the timing belt cover.

Air cleaner is under the tank. 5 min and the tank is off. Just 2 bolts and 2 hoses.

Service manual?

Buy one, they come available.

I also like the PDF. Keep a copy on my tablet, and home/work PC.

Actually, there's two tank bolts, then 8-9 air box cover bolts.  And you must take care of the thin gasket. And you have to pull the JIS (Jap. Phillips) screw out of the center of the petcock, and disconnect a vent and gas line, and the gas gauge sending unit if it is an interstate.

It's not that hard, but harder than servicing any Vtwin air cleaner.

The filter has a lot of surface area and goes a long time before really dirty (dusty conditions shortens life).

Experience shows that gas tanks stored on the floor, don't fall off benches and hit the floor. Though they can still be tripped over.

Go to Shop Talk (link at top of this page and on main page) and look for the Carl Kulow Maintenance Page on the right. Tank removal instructions 1 2 3. Spend a few hours on the Shop Talk page on a rainy day and be amazed at the wealth of info about your bike. It may never see the inside of a dealership again!
