So I picked up a used one on Ebay pretty cheap, thinking it might be a good spare, but when it showed up I put it in a vise and this u-joint has maybe .020" radial play (with some pressure). Is that not worth even installing if I end up needing to change out the u-joint I now have? Seems like for all the hassle to change a Valk u-joint, not least getting that cursed boot back on, a person might just as well go with a brand new OEM u-joint? thanks.

It might go 100,000 miles. The whole time you'll be wondering if you'll make it to the next corner ... -Mike

Keep it in the saddle bag til you NEED it. More likely than not WILL get you home. Rear wheel bearings and U-joint R & R at 103000+ miles. While the U-joint did not fail completely it HAS seen better days. It WILL get me home if need be. When I R & Rd the U-joint I went with a new boot. RIDE SAFE.

For all the work it required replacing one for this novice, I sure wouldn't stick a used one in there (unless absolutely convinced it was as good as new).
Put it in the bags for trips. But if you break down near home, order a new one. With two bikes, I keep a new one (and shaft and pinion and boot) in my parts bin, with a lot of other things.

The fact that you are asking the question means you aren't comfortable with the situation. Go with your gut feel. Buy a new one.

You are absolutely right. Thing is new ones are kind of pricey, so I'm thinking I would wait and buy one when the one I have goes out . My bike only has 45 K on it, and I don't think there's anything bad going on in there, but since I have a spare pumpkin, spare driveshaft, spare whole rear wheel, might as well also have a u-joint.

That's a drag. Seems a bit premature – what kind of riding you do?
