A buddy of mine has a new wing and is going to install a belly pan.

Any of you install one yet, and if so what one did you use?

I put one on.  I got it on eBay.  I believe they are all the same for the Goldwing/F6B/Valkyrie.

I got this one since I was worried about the heat from the exhaust. I really like it since the bottom of the engine is still clean and its easy to change the oil.

Hmmmm.... I was thinking of adding an accent LED kit to my Valk...

A belly pan could be a great idea to limit the amount of light that hits the ground.

Are there any benefits to a belly pan other than protection?

Smiley just like a dirt bike, it offers protection from various hazards on the road. Look under yours and notice the antifreeze canister sitting out and ready to be smashed. Wouldn't ride without one. Ebay

I do it for protection but also it keeps the engine looking good. The Jap bolts have a anodizing on them that when they get dirty that anodizing turns color and looks old. Just a pet peeve, a bit of WD40 and belly pan keep it looking good. Unless you get the one that Goldstar recommends I doubt they have that much strength to really withstand a good blow. It may be enough to deflect the debris in the road that would fly up and that's ok and when riding I have heard something hit it on occasion. I wonder if you hit like a stick if one end could actually wedge into the engine and puncher the tank or oil filter or make a good mark on the engine. Now with the belly pan the bottom is smooth and there is no place for a object to wedge into and use the road as leverage to puncture the tank or filter. That is why I did it but I also didn't want to add extra heat or stop the catalytic converters from getting appropriate air circulation. I have seen cats on cars turn red hot when there is a misfire and would not want to think what would happen on these bikes. Most cats run in the 500 to 600 degree range and ventilation is not something I really want to deprive them of.

From time to time I see the word "Jap" used, which is an ethnic  and racial slur. I see it a lot on the motorcycle forums and it bothers me. No diiferent than any other slur! I know that it isn't being used that way here on this forum. I think it would be great if we self policed ourselfs!  cooldude  Soap box out!

If you believe its short for anything but Japanese, especially in reference to motorcycles not people,  I wish you would let everyone know including myself. This is not the Harley forum and I have spent considerable money buying not one but two Jap bikes. To me putting my money where my mouth is an endorsement of the jap bikes.  A racial slur as it refers to Japanese would be gooks, slanty eyes, and the names continue. Since there was no malice intended, and jap was used correctly I would say, you have a personal issue or don't know where you are posting. cooldude: cooldude

If you really felt that you knew its not being used as a slur here I would not have brought it up here but, Maybe you should have brought it up at the appropriate time and board you go to rather than now.

I would also say that the official police on this board "the moderators" are very capable of deciding what is correct and not correct a position that you don't hold.

Below is a site with a number of Japanese racial slurs and while Jap is on there it is listed as short for Japanese. I don't consider this a slur except when used by Harley riders or others jealous of our awesome bikes.

Robert, did you seriously refer me to a "Slur Data Base" to prove that the word "Jap" is not a slur? And, why do you think that it is a slur only when Harley riders use the word? Incredulous!  crazy2

If you cant tell me why Jap is a slur then I really don't see the need to tell you why jap spoken by Harley riders is a slur. Maybe that is why its just Incredulous to you and the very reason you are a bit touchy over this. I would have thought you have had a bit more understanding about things especially motorcycles or people but age does not mean wisdom. I hear Hillary is looking for a good pc mgr maybe you could apply.

Well thanks guys I now will go ride my Jap bike to the bakery just down the block where Frenchy is making some delicious pistachio filled Croissants and then go buy some gas from the local red dot not black.
I will throw my leg around my beautiful Jap bike and go to work. Where I will spend time talking to my Jew friend. Where I will gladly spend the time also talking to many customers of various abbreviated names and ethnicities. All while marveling at what we share here in the US as Yanks and the good things each brings to the table. But thanks for this guys because at the end of the day when I throw my leg over my Jap bike and enjoy the ride home while passing the Euro cars, I will get a chuckle out of this.

First, go ahead and get off the soap box. You can try policing me all you want, just as I can try to get you to kiss my a** every time you do it. But this is the internet, where our words are 1s and 0s brought together and deciphered by electronic components and then displayed on a screen. Some of these components were more than likely manufactured in a Jap Factory. Your being bothered has nothing to do with that process.

Jap is an abbreviation for Japanese. If you interpret it as offensive then that is your perception driven by the context you've seen it through and that only applies to you.

Also, this thread was about belly pans. The information given before your Jap drivel is quite useful. You should start a new "Jap is bad" thread instead of poisoning good technical threads like this. I'll be sure to then avoid your thread so you won't be bothered and I don't have to shake my head in befuddlement.

Excellent! We now move on to direct insults. Now it's a moron party.
You are correct, we would make great bedfellows. We wouldn't have to worry about bothering each other's fragile sensibility or decency. I'd give you a gold star Goldstar, but I have a feeling it wouldn't ever meet you expectations. Anyways, let us get back to belly pans... Unless of course Brownstar needs to get the last word in.

Shocked I'm with Robert, I absolutely don't think the term Jap is anything other than from Japan. Yikes, Never would have been bothered if I was called Scot for Scottish????? Zero tolerance and easy offended is taking this country down. Come on guys and girls, It's Christmas, forgive and get on with it. After all we do own the best bikes on the planet and they are from Japan

Moving back to the belly pan discussion on my Jap bike, I had my shop install the belly pan I purchased.  It is the pan with slots instead of mounting holes.  He said he took the bike for a test ride and bottomed out, the pan hitting the road.  He said it was very low on the bike.  I asked him to remove it.

Did I buy the wrong pan?  Any similar experiences?

Thanks,

Brad

Sorry about the orientation of the pic but wanted to try to get as much of the belly pan and mounting as I could in the pic to let you see that there is no way if this is the pan you have that it should be close to the road at all.

If you look mine it fits across the headers and is perfectly protecting the coolant tank and perfectly flush with the bottom of the tank and the bike. Where the belly pan comes down from the side covers and bends to go flat under the bike in that bend, its resting on the headers.

The pan cannot be mounted any higher because the headers stop it and the tank stop it. I have to wonder if the dealer made a mistake mounting it, becase if he mounted it correctly the headers or coolant tank are the bottom of the bike or lowest points. If he went over a speed bump then it was lucky the belly pan was there may have been damage. Something is not right here with the dealer saying he bottomed out. So I doubt very seriously the cause for bottoming out was the belly pan but more than likely some other reason.

http://wingstuff.com/products/24485-performance-stainless-belly-pan-for-gl1800-w-oversize-fasteners?sitesync=done

Just as side note on installation I worried at first about the belly pan since I couldn't bend or adjust it to give clearance from the headers. Its not hard to install just PIA when it comes to putting it on correctly since you have to take off the lower side covers and its time consuming. I was also concerned about noise or vibration in the pan since it sits on the headers. I thought it would rest on the center part of the engine but it sits about 1/4 inch lower so you have that amount of clearance between the pan and the engine. This 1/4 inch is how far lower the coolant tank and headers are under the engine. But after a few miles the pan fits beautifully now with no rattles or vibrations and I have heard things hit the pan and since the engine also stays way cleaner I am happy I have it.

My jap bike really didn't care where it was made but I tried to find country of origin which I suspect is not the yanks but more than likely chino

I have the smooth one on my F6B and it has scaped the bottom 2 times but it never hit bottom before I put the belly pan on. ( I drove the bike almost a year without one.) So I am glad I have one on my bike.
As far as the dealer putting the pan on wrong I don't think it can go on wrong.

I've installed the Show Chrome brand black pan on mine, and it fits fairly high and tight. Looks good, and takes the worry out of the coolant jug being exposed down there. cooldude
