Anybody know? I thought I saw 2.75:1 at one time...I am thinking of going to a 205/50-16 and that would change the effective gear from 2.75 to a 2.96...thats like changing a gear and launching even harder...

According to the service manual, the ratios are as follows:
Primary reduction: 78/49 (1.591)
Secondary reduction: 34/35 (0.971)
Final reduction: 34/12 (2.833)

With the reductions in the transmission and Final Drive, the effective rear ratio is 4.38

For example, if the engine is turning 3000 RPM, the wheel will be rotating at 685 RPM.

The ring and pinion in the differential of my Mustang is 3.73. The ring and pinion in my Valkyrie differential is what? And based on the replies, I made this comparison chart to make sure I am comparing apples and apples and not apples and oranges. The specs on the left are for the aftermaket T-5 currently in my Mustang. Are what you are calling the final reduction the ring and pinion in the Valkyrie' Thanks for indulging me LOL

...thats like changing a gear and launching even harder...

I don't think it's an issue. The bike is capable of being fully loaded (2 over weight riders and all their gear) without much extra use of the clutch.

Or if someone has a final drive in their hands...turn the paet that goes to the wheel one time and count howmany times the part that connect to the drive shaft...using my car...1 rotation of the wheel =3.73 roraions of the drive shaft

The Ring and Pinion ratio is 2.833. This is what is referred to as the Final Reduction-this is the ratio of the ring and pinion in the Final Drive.
You have to remember that are two other gear reductions from the crankshaft through the back of the engine to the tranmission.
The Primary Reduction is 1.591 and the Secondary Reduction is 0.971.
These have to be taken into consideration when computing the actual engine speed to wheel speed ratio.

So while the gear ratio in the final drive is 2.833 (34/12), when you take into account the reductions inside the engine case to the transmisson, the overall ratio is 4.38.

That is the actual ratio of the crankshaft to the back wheel when the transmission is in 4th gear (Ratio 1.0).

When in 5th gear (overdrive ratio 0.805) the effective overall ratio from the engine to the back wheel is ~3.52 but remember, this is in overdrive.

Keep in mind that a 205/50 will be about 1.8" smaller diameter. The bike will stand up more on the sidestand. Could be a problem.

Have a couple of slight differences on gearing, my manual lists secondary reduction as .939 (31/33) and 4th as .964 (27/28).

What manual are you looking at? The figures I stated are from the 98 Owners Manual and the Honda Service Manual. There can always be errors in manuals but I think these are correct.

Honda Shop Manual, Issued August 1996, number 62MZ000
This is basically for models other than the States.
I have the other ratios listed on a disc, would have to go an look at that for the year/manual number.
Maybe the difference between Goldwing and Valkyrie trans.

You had quoted the correct figures in your post #2.  They are identical for all Valkyries/all years. Honda would not alter the ratios once the first Valkyrie is produced for sale. Valkyries only, not necessarily the Goldwing.

I don't what manual that is because my owners manual which I received when I bought my Valkyrie states

the exact figures that are posted in reply #2.

The difference I see with yours is the secondary reduction figure which you say is .939

My owners manual says that figure is .971  That really is an insignificant difference.

My manual is 31mby610 (00X31-mby-6100)

We know that there are differences between bikes in the US and bikes shipped outside of the US. Differences in jetting and air cleaners for example. Could there be different gear ratios also? Who would have this information?

Who knows with Honda.
They made different engine casings for the Valk, believe the gears are also different to the Goldwing
Other differences  you can add, our exhaust piggies are only 1/2", have seen 3/4 on an American bike. Metric speedo's, PAIR valves originally only listed for Switzerland bikes.
The reverse gear on Japanese bikes
Just weird if it is a misprint they also list the different teeth count for the gears.
