My VRCC Family,

I’m asking for prayers for a work friend of mine and her boyfriend who were in a serious motorcycle accident over the weekend. Her name is Laurie. At this time she’s in a trauma center at a Saginaw, MI hospital.  I don’t have a lot of information at this time. I know she was a passenger on her boyfriend’s bike. I do know there are possible head and spinal cord injuries. She doesn’t have feeling in all of her extremities. It’s too early to say for certain if there’s permanate damage as there is a lot of swelling. Her boyfriend, Ron, is in serious condition with broken bones and a punctured lung.

I met Laurie several years back when I was auditing her bank where she was the manager in the Farmington Hills, MI area. We hit it right off and we knew pretty quick that we had a lot in common and still do. We’re about the same age, same career background, and children about the same age. Then we had son’s get married the same summer. So there was talk about our Mother of Groom dresses and how we would need to find just the right one. She even gave me suggestions of where to shop in her area. Now we have grandchildren about the same age. We always get our pictures out, first the wedding, then the grandchildren.

There was a day a couple years ago when Laurie who was single at the time started dating a man with a Harley. Our conversations then were about our love of riding with our men. It wasn’t too long after that she started talking about getting her endorsement; I had mine so we were able to talk about the process. She started talking about getting her own Harley and was like a little girl with excitement. It wasn’t all that long ago I got an email with pictures of Laurie on her Harley. She looked so proud and happy. She still doesn’t have her endorsement, but she has the bike for when she does.  Each time we see each other it’s like we just talked and it could have been months since we saw each other or talked.

I probably didn’t need to share all that I did. I just want you to know a little about her and our friendship. For some reason this is really hitting home. I’m never afraid to ride with Pat; but with our CBR trip coming up on Friday I have to admit I’m a little anxious.

Please remember Laurie and Ron in your prayers for God’s mercy to allow for a full recovery.

Thank you
Blessings

RTaz,

I understand they are at St. Mary's in Saginaw. I think this hit the local newspaper, I haven't seen it. Someone is supposed to send it to me.

Thanks,
Carolyn

P.S. Looking forward to seeing you and Devon this weekend

It appears they hit some sort of obstacle in the road and Ron lost control of the bike. He had no head injury and was sent to a different hospital. He is in critical condition with broken bones (arms/ribs and vertebra), and either a brused or punctured lung. He and Laurie are both in a brace called a TCL brace that goes from neck to the waist.

Laurie was being moved from Intensive Care to a regular room today. Her head injury is stable. She does have broken vertebra in her upper back and neck. She can move her arms..just a little and has some feeling in her legs but she can't move them. She has no other broken bones. The major concern now is the spinal cord injury. She is able to talk and sit up. THANK YOU JESUS!

I will make sure I share with her when I can all of your support.

Prayers from Indiana for a complete recovery.
I must admit that when I rode by myself I never worried about getting in an accident, but now that I have someone on the back that I love it makes me nervous at times. Stories like this just reinforce those feelings. If something happens to me, whatever it is, it is. If something happened to Andrea, I could never forgive myself. I pray for healing for both of them.

I can tell you I think Patrick is gald I've not gotten my own bike to ride. He's says just can't stand the thought of seeing me going down on the bike.

I know we all take risks everytime we throw our leg over that seat. If Patrick is riding there's no other place I want to be than sitting behind him on that Valk.  When Patrick even talks about going someplace on the bike I'm all about it, where are we going, can I go.

I want to thank everyone who posted and even those who didn't but thought about Laurie and Ron.

Looking forwarding to seeing my VRCC Family this weekend.

Carolyn, you know you got em from Louisiana as well.

When she gets stable enough to send cards, etc., let us know - I know IT MEANT THE WORLD TO JILL when she went down.  She keeps all the cards in a special box in her closet and pulls them out everytime I am there - "These people didn't even know me!" - (Um, yeah they did - you were a rider) and there is this huge pile - each with a well wish.

Let us know what we can do when she stabilizes - until then, you know that prayer is on it's way!

Warren,

When Laurie and Ron stablize and I know where they'll be for a while I'll send out a post with the particulars.

I had already thought about it but didn't now if I should ask. You make a good point "Um, yeah they did - you were a rider"

Thank you so much!

Carolyn, we haven't met yet, but I'm sorry to hear about your friends. We have a CT member who had similar injuries while avoiding a deer in PA a few years ago, and he's now riding and living large, an inspiration to us all. Sounds like they are getting excellent care and are in good hands. Thoughts & prayers from MA, you mentioned Farmington Hills, my mom was the organist at the Methodist Church in Northville on 8 Mile Road for many years. Even more prayers that the recent rash of accidents come to an end...

Carolyn, one of the great things about this group is heck, we will do our best to give the mail dude a hernia bringing the cards in!!!!

Seriously, Jill remembers every day when Bear would read the cards to her.  She said that everyday she cried thinking that all THESE people who didn't even know her were thinking about her.  It REALLY CAN MEAN A LOT - and I am a witness that it can!  She says that is when she knew she would do what it took to stand and walk again.  Not doctors, not therapists - but some unknown folks giving her encouragement and just letting her know......hey, they cared.  There were folks sending her emails and calling Bear who had hit deer and suffered spinal injuries giving counsel advice, doctor advice...whatever....just touching a fellow rider for a moment and letting them know that they were not alone....others cared.

She got like 4 cards from the family and a GAZILLION from our little group here and it really freaked her out!  It is fun for me to sit in their home and she pulls out the pile and they are by area or handle and I get to say, "YEAH, that is Patrick and Carolyn - you know my copilot when I wrecked - the ones who gave the truck!  Oh yeah, that is RJ from Iowa with a million miles on 2 wheels, oh yeah that is TP - the guy who brought you wild rice from Minnesota - sure wish I would have called you to let you know he was coming like I was suppose to, yeah that is Lyn Del who took you on the trike to feel the wind again, yeah, yeah, that is..............................."

It is fun to read the cards a year or two or three later and let them tell you who it was from and you get to tell them who THAT WAS.

Let us know - I see a HERNIA in the making - for sure. Yea, You betcha!!!!!!

Bear and Jill read the board daily now - neither are on a Valk - they just keep up with the people.  I can throw around handles with them, just like on the board, and they know who I am talking about.......

Until then, PRAYERS!

I just got an email from a friend of Laurie's and this is what it said:

Laurie is doing much better today she is able to move all 4 limbs (right arm is still very weak), eating solids. They believe she just bruised her spinal cord.  She is supposed to leave St. Mary's either Tomorrow, Friday or Monday and go to a rehab center in Saginaw, this is where most of her family lives, to get her back and limbs working.  Her son will send the address of the rehab center -- he prefers we wait until then to send cards or flowers.  She can take visitors at the hospital or center.

This is great news!

I didn't hear about Ron, I asked and haven't heard back.

Patrick and i will plan on visiting as soon as we find time, CBR this weekend and out of town for work next week.

I'll share the address as soon as I get one.

Thank you all again for your support of good thoughts and prayers.

Blessings,
Carolyn
