update; as far as insurance bike is TOTALED. Value $14,000. I am buying it! Scrap price $2-$3000. The frame and motor are fine. Lyn-del is going to drive up with a trailer and we will take me& my baby home. Me on the other hand, don't move or walk very well. I don't know how many lives this cat has left if any. But I will make it and the next time you see my dragon it will have had a face lift. It will take alot of work, but I have a plan and we will both be back on the road before you know it. Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes. Ya gota love this club (no all brothers and sisters!) LOVE Y'ALL     WIZARD

Soo glad to hear you doing okay. Bikes and be replaced and people can't.

Looking forward to seeing what the "new" bike will look like.

Wizard, glad to see your post. Keep healing and take your time with that and the rebuild. I'm sure it will be great when done.

As a side note, when I totalled my 99 std, they only wanted $1,000 - $1,200 for the salvage.  Shocked I think they (Marekl/BikeLine) had to get 15% of fair value before add ons. Just an FYI, maybe you can negotiate that salvage price down a bit.  Wink

Good luck and heal well.  cooldude

Ahhh..... but in the Houston area, winter is the riding season!!  Beat the heat, you know.

While he's working on his bike, I might, just might, lend him a bike to ride.  Maybe.  If he asks real nice.

I know I'll feel better when I get to Michigan and see him for myself.  Early Bird is driving up with me, we left my house about 6 and stopped to pick up a trailer from the bike shop.  We're now 300 miles closer to Michigan.

Night, all .....

Talked to my brother this evening and he sounds good.  The bruising is really starting, and with the blood thinners he is on, it must have been deep bruising.

He told me what happened, the condition of the bike and most importantly, HOW HE IS DOING.

Guardian Angels were riding with our brother the other day!  angel angel angel

I think everything is gonna be OK.  I told him that I was glad that Ray and Lyn Del would be with him - since it took so long to bruise (even on the blood thinners) to watch out for him.  Said he was sore and the bike would be OK - engine seemed OK, no damage to frame - just front in.  He finally got his boots back that were yanked off when he went through the windshield - that is a good thang!

Nothing broken on him - that is a VERY GOOD THANG!!!!!

Just black and blue - like a bad acid trip.

Heal quickly bro!!!!!!

The bike can be rebuilt - you can't!  He said they did full x-rays, catscans, etc and all seems good......

ALL GOOD SIGNS!!!!!!!

Mine was very similar last year.  Insurance Company settled for the payout to me, I bought the bike back for the salvage value - set by the adjuster at 10% of the bike's value.  I paid the tow and storage (made a deal with the wrecker for Cash), they forgave the $500 deductible and the title doesn't show as a total or salvage.

Basically they paid me out on the bike and I got it back for just over $500 and it has a clean title.

Good luck healing up, keep  moving if you can to pump all they blood from the bruising out of your legs.

Well, he is a bit grumpier than usual!  Talk to Dad this morning.  He is looking forward to seeing Lyn-Del and Ray.  He says he is feeling better.  I hope I can get him out out of the Hotel and spend some time with the family.  Now that he can walk again. We dont see him that much up here.  I told him he should join the circus.  Human Cannonball!   According to the guys at the Napa he crashed in front of, he got about 10 foot in the air and I would say 60 ft of distance.  We are just lucky he landed in the grass.   I still cant believe the kickstand could do that.  That my friends is scary. ----Mike

It is scary. Something we ALL need to be aware of....especially as our bikes are all getting a  bit "long in the tooth"...so to speak...ie older...more miles...more wear and tear. as i said before, i'm now carrying a bungie cord and replacement spring bolt  with me AT ALL TIMES....after having it happen on Sherry's bike. She was lucky and did not crash...........

I started doing an inspection of the spring, pin and kickstand on a regular basis. Plus, if the sidestand light does not come on during startup the bike goes nowhere till fixed. Best add on I can think of for bike safety.
I replaced the spring once so far because it was streatched beyond what I felt was ok.
Yes, it can all still fail without warning. But, preventive maintenance does help!
I had a similar issue years ago on a smaler bike. Luckily I wasn't hurt and the bike wasn't hurt to bad. I was going pretty slow..

Wizard,

I hope you heal back to full strength soon...  I was always told that something good will come out of everything... The first thing that comes to mind is all the Valk's on the road this weekend.  Going to various rides and most are probably heading to CBR.  I think your situation has brought on some well deserving safety percautions and awareness.  It is a reminder to all of us to be careful on our bikes and pay attention to possible failures that may go wrong as we ride.  Everytime I hop on my bike since you went down, has caused me to double check my kickstand... I don't want to join the circus just yet  2funny

Hang in there!!  Get well my friend!

May I ask what Insurance Company You Had ?

And was what I read from another post true a Kick Stand Spring was the Culprit ?

The bike was insured with Progressive.  When he had it custom painted, he increased the "accessories" coverage to cover the paint (I didn't know you could do that, but I do now!!).  So that beautiful new paint job was covered.

It was either the spring that broke, or the "hook" pin that holds it on the frame (this pin can be broken/impacted when bumping over curbs, pot holes, etc.  I generally carry a spare .... Usually when this pin breaks, the sidestand drops down, and the safety switch kills the bike (if it is a functional switch).  Wizard disconnected this switch, but the stand generally pops back up with little effort. HOWEVER, this time, it appears that the spring itself wedged into the exact wrong spot on the sidestand, and wedged it so it could not be raised.

It was one of those freak combinations of events that caused the accident.  By the grace of God, Wizard was not severely injured.  His helmet does not have a scratch on it.  His steel toed/steel shank boots did their job, judging by the damage to the toe of one of them.   The bike (currently on the trailer outside our motel in Fort Wayne, IN) is surprisingly uninjured.  It definitely needs a new windshield, headlight, taillight, tach and speedo.  Our bike guy has looked at a photo of the tank and believes he can pull the dent out.  He called yesterday to say he thinks he has a Valk headlight, tack and speedo in his spare parts (used) stock.  So we may well get that handled fairly quickly.  The saddlebags are toast.

Wizard's original tins are sitting on a shelf at home, so they can pull the  blue skins off and put the burgundy/cream back on, and when the Wizard's stiffness eases up, hopefully he and the bike will both be ready to ride.
