I had a new clutch installed about 1,000 miles ago and no problems until recently.

When the bike is cold (ambient Florida temps, not extremely cold) and starting in neutral, then shifting into first gear, its almost as though I'm not even using the clutch. The gears grind and the bike will lurch forward often stalling. I have since started using second gear but it still grinds a bit. However, I can then proceed through the gears without an issue. When I stop, I can then shift into first gear with no issue. It then shifts smoothly for the rest of the day. It ONLY does it when the bike is COLD and only does it THE FIRST TIME I put in first gear.

So whats up with that?

Can only be oil is too heavy when cold. They all have clunky gearboxes - square cut gears- but sounds to me like you need an oil change.

I've had this bike since 2000, always (at least for the last 10-years) used Shell Rotella T and have ridden it in much colder weather in North Alabama...a bunch. Oil was changed just a couple hundred miles ago. It has never done this.

However, I do appreciate the feedback!

Check the bushing for wear in the Clutch lever, if that is tight, I would rebuild the master and slave cylinders.  Not expensive and easy to do.

Although after a re-read of your post, unless it is brittle seals in the M or S cylinder, it should do it all the time, not only when cold and not only the first time.

The other thing you could do it pull the clutch in with the bike in gear and rock it back and forth to break the disks free before you start it and see if that makes any difference in the grinding.

Maybe  bleed the clutch again to make sure there is no air in the line. Does the lever have lots play and does it go all the way in. I read somewhere that a guy had a problem like yours and it was the clutch lever bushing was worn out.

Thanks guys, I'm hoping its the bushing. A master cylinder rebuild wouldn't be a big deal either.

However, It seems that if it were either of the two, it would do it all the time?

Rule out the easy stuff first,, the lever bushing and the hydraulics.  Either one could make the clutch disengage at a different point in the lever pull, and you would think that you would notice that..?? The lever bushing is an easy check and dis-assembly. Is the DOT4 in the master cylinder still at the full level?

Barnett clutches have been know to do that. It only happens on the first time you try to put it in gear. I had one in my 71 750-4 and it did that but boy was it great other wise.

If I remember correctly, these Honda 1500's have a build in device that increases the rpm when the engine is cold, I'm sure everyone here has experienced when shifting in first the bike lunges forward a little, that's when this thing is working, once the engine warms up it shut's down...normal...you would usually get a clunk when you shift to first not a grinding of gears....try letting it warm up before shifting and see if it still does it...

on my old 1100 after I installed a new clutch, it would "stick" if it sat for any appreciable amount of time.  I could pull the clutch lever in but the bike would lurch forward like it was in gear.  I had to pull the clutch and then rock the bike until the plates broke free then it would be fine.
I chalked it up to the fresh discs and fresh plates creating a vacuum of sorts with each other causing them to stick together.  more of a nuisance than a problem
