I ve noticed a few pics on the web of IS with what looks like a one piece seat, that has a drivers backrest. Am I seeing these pictures right. Does the OEM one piece seat have the ability to add a drivers backrest, or am I not seeing the same seat in these pictures? If the backrest is available does anyone know what make and model it is?

To the best of my knowledge the OEM seat must be modified to accept a drivers backrest. I base that on never having seen a stock unmodified one that had an opening for the back rest.

There is a company that made a Backrest-I forget who-that was used with the stock seat without modification. It had a rail that mounted to the frame rail. The rail was barely visible with the seat in the riding position.

This has been the only one I've seen for the Valkyrie that doesn't need modification of the OEM seat. I still have this in my parts. It has a bar, I think it bolts onto the two fender rail bolts. Then two tubes that the backrest sits in. Easily removable for passenger to mount, and then put it back in, and drive.

The one I am talking about is similar to this one but the mount is one piece and all chrome and has a bigger curved type rest on it. A friend of mine has one on his IS.

I always wondered if the GW GL1500 back rest would work too. It's like mine, but the ends go in horizontally.

With the Utopia you DO have to cut a small slit in the seat..... they supply a "cap" that covers it....I have one on my IS seat sitting in the Garage... I have a solo seat that I use now that uses a different bracket to support the Utopia..... I had to prove I already owned a Utopia backrest before they would seek me the different bracket.... they wanted me to buy the whole kit.. go figure... the bracket for the I/S seat attaches to the seat base... the standard mount attaches to the fender.... So if I wanted to put the I/S seat back on I'd have to remove the other bracket. Thats why I have the I/S sat sitting for the last several years...
For the value the Utopia is the best.. I think you can get one for about $160... the other one is almost double, plus the bars sometimes hit you in the hip.. At least the one on my Wing did....

custom world I believe is the mfg. but doubt they are around anymore for the old Valk that is, but like said, is a pain to remove the 2 long bolts that the bar on each side attaches thru just to remove the seat if needed to.

I had a Pro Tac backrest for another bike years ago. Was not as good as one attached to a seat, but OK. To adjust one fore and aft, you put the rest on the ground and bend the SS arms with your foot, a little. That bar stock is tougher than you think. It's hardly a science but do-able. To adjust it shorter, you cut the lower arms off where they poke into the mounts. A little at a time. Make sure you get one with mounts made for the Valk. It doesn't look like they make them anymore for Valk, and the mounts (to fender struts) are not interchangeable. http://www.protac.net/page7/page9/honda.html
