Durango Colorado

Just got back from Durango. Great trip. 4 couples rented a fabulous home on a cliff with great scenery off the porch and we rode 3 times up through Silverton and Ouray. On one of the trips we rode on through Ridgeway and over to Utah to Canyon Lands National Park. Cool ride. We rode the train once up to Silverton and back.....nice ride....very scenic. Me and my brother in law took the Durango area glider flight.....I really liked that. It was very exciting from the time we were towed up to 3500 feet till the time we landed. it was to be a thirty minute ride and the first 20 minutes the instructor was catching thermals and we only lost 200 feet in 20 minutes. Then we came in and landed. The whole trip was great. Only problems we had was one of the two Harleys was carburated and it ran like crap bainging out and backfiring at high altitude. Had to put the guys wife on my brother in laws Goldwing any time we were at high altitude. He also ran out of gas between Ouray and Utah....nearly 30 miles till the next town big enough to have a station.....so we found a car type aircompressor with a air hose and cut off the fittings and got some gas out of the goldwing. He made it to the next town at high altitude and was banging and popping and I told him it was because the Harley didn't like trying to burn Honda gas......ha.....he didn't think it was funny.

It sounds like you had a great time in a nice area. I rode thru just 4 weeks ago and the road is in good shape.
I usually have a 3 foot peice of very small diameter "tygon" or similar tubing in the bottom of the saddle bag. I ride with Willow a lot you know.

A few years back my wife and I were on a bike trip through there with three other couples. On the way into town I saw the glider-port, so as soon as we were checked into the downtown hotel, I went back out there. Although a licensed privat pilot, I had never flown a glider and the guy giving me the ride was a certified glider instructor, so I got my first lesson after he found out about the license. I thought I was doing great, getting up to 9-10k feet until he told me what the local ground level was. Still had a ball, lots of thermals at midafternoon. He told me to go ahead and land while he talked me through it, I told him "just don't go anywhere until we stop." The landing was OK, different than I was used to, I loved the silence of the flight though. That's a beautiful area to ride through, the places you mention bring back some fond memories.

Anyone wanting to rent a home in the area this place we rented was a BIG THUMBS UP. You can find it on the internet if you search "RINCON LODGE DURANGO" . there are pictures there also.
6000 SQ FT 7 BEDROOM, 4 BATH and it is right on top of a mountain knoll that is flat on top for about 2 acres. gravel road going up to the house and kind of steep but not a problem. very nice home. cost was about $600 per night but we had 4 couples so price was about the same as a hotel in Durango per couple. it's a "I RECOMMEND" place to stay.
