Kim & I are going to ride up to Savannah, GA 10/10-10/12 for a pre-Biketoberfest mini road trip. We've never been there. We are staying at the Cambria Suites by the airport & will ride into town. So far the only firm plan is to see Tybee Island on one day, all else is ???.
What are the "gotta do & gotta see" things while in Savannah?
Any places to avoid considering we will be bike touring?

Thanks in advance!

If you are anywhere near downtown do yourself a favor and visit Leopold's Ice Cream Shop.  It is a fascinating place with lots of movie memorabilia and the pistachio ice cream is out of this world.

If i'm thinking right, Savannah has the old cotton wharehouse district. Cool old historical buildings turned into shops and resturants. Also a lot of cool old houses.

I've never been there, so I have no idea.  But, if you happen to park in a precast concrete/brick parking garage on Bryan Street, I worked on the design of it back in the mid-late 1990's.  Cool

Stayed there several years ago...lots of old shops and cobble stone streets...I am not sure how you or your Valk would like them...caution...they are slippery when wet...TG I was walking...there is also a riverwalk off the main drag...nice places to eat there...and the people were very nice...I had my valk in the back of my truck....I know I know...I was working my way down to Biketoberfest...Finally got to ride when i got to St. Augustine and left the truck in the hotel lot....

Take some pics of your mini trip...Lots of trees with spanish moss...after the Palm trees on a beach...my favorite look of trees...

My wife & I go there quite often ( 6 hr  drive) we stay in the historical district. A lot of history in Savannah, and a lot of good resturants. Paula Deen's resturant is there...but you better get reservations before you go. Plan on doing a lot of walking they have great parks with century old live oaks.  Be sure to check out the crab shack  and lighthouse on Tybee.  Have a good time

Thanks for the ideas guys!
We are going to ride up 301 from home, jump over to 17/25 and take that route up to Savannah. We are going to avoid I-95 untill the last short leg to the hotel. Looks like 17/25 meanders through the GA countryside & marshlands, lotsa little bridges too. About 250 miles or 5-6 hours at a leisurely pace.
BigRig, some of the local boys told me about those cobblestone streets too. Shocked We'll park & walk in the river district! Cool Palm trees & beaches are some of my favorite places to be also! cooldude
T-bird, the Crabshack is a must do, one of my co-workers printed their menu from their website for us & he agrees with you too.

Eddie,
Great Destination, (Looking for my pics) Things to check out...
Downtown is great, historic, lot's of great little places to eat. We ate lunch there and saw some of the most enormous freighters coming into the shipping channel, looked like floating cities!
Tybee Island is a must, tour the lighthouse if your not scared of heights. We really enjoyed the Fort and the Moat, lot's of history !
Have a great time!

Just up the road is Beaufort SC. A pretty, small town. http://www.beaufortsc.org/cwo/visit_beaufort

Nearby is Hunting Island State Park with lighthouse (unless is got washed away.

This park was the location for the Vietnam scenes in Forrest Gump.

The last time I visited Savannah, I watched a couple on a Harley have a BAD time navigating those cobblestones. There was a certain "banana peel" humor effect but then I thought, "there but for the grace of Joe Boyd go I"!
It gets worse on sections of River St.
Oh yeah! You'll see many cool houses on the way out to Tybee! Have fun!!

Stop in Brunswick, GA on I-95 and get some brunswick stew! It's just after the FLA state line.

Ah yes.... Brunswick.
A few years back we had a non-scheduled stop there. TWO flat tires on I-95 while in the car! That was not fun.. especially with 2 kids & a loaded car. Luckily a local cop was working I-95 & he called some buddies who owned a garage with a rollback. Toted us to his shop, mounted 2 used tires on a Friday evening. Total bill $125 including tow! cooldude We drove up to Savannah stayed the night then first thing in the morning bought 4 new Michelins at a Wallyworld. We were heading to the mountains & I wanted NO more tire issues for the trip!
Nice folks in Brunswick! angel
