I need some help from you folks in Kansas.  Anyone know of or have a small (license not required) scooter they want to sell?  Due to some very poor decision making, my son is facing a 1yr license suspension and is looking for a scooter to get him to and from work.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

When you do find a scooter, you might want to double check that he has both mirrors. I watched a scooter flip the other day in part because he only had one loose flopping mirror.

I suppose it was about a week ago. I was riding home from work near dusk. I saw the scooter up in the distance, so I slowed down. I try not to pass them in curves. I also try to give them room. So I was slowing down and following him about two car lengths back from him. In the curves he was nearly dragging his knees, sweeping from the white line to the other side of the yellow like he was racing around Daytona. I fell back a little further, because I didn't think he knew where he was in the lane.

In the straight away I was about to pass, but hadn't given it any gas. I couldn't decide if I wanted to try as much as he'd swung across the lane a few minute previously. He was on the white line in the straight.

The scooter only had one after market motorcycle round mirror on the right handle bar. It was flopping around. He reached over with his left hand to hold it up so he could see behind him. Instead of panning the mirror, he held it straight and then tried to lean back and forth to see behind him.  As he was leaned over--off balance--he caught sight of me and it spooked him. He immediately ran off the road.

He could have just rode through the yard and slowed down, but instead he tried to wrestle it back off the shoulder onto the road. He almost had it when he went across a driveway. The added up and over wasn't good for him. The mailbox was also not a great obstacle. He tried to lean past the mailbox when he finally lost control of the scooter.

He went off elbow first across the asphalt.

The scooter flipped a few times.

He came to a rest in the road on his stomach.

I came to a stop behind him (note a good following distance kept me from running over him).

He got up and just stood there staring at me.

I asked if he was alright. He just looked at me mean.

He then went and picked up the scooter out of the road.

I was blinking at traffic trying to slow traffic down behind us. It was working. I kept asking if was okay.
He didn't respond, but he did pick the bike up, find his other flip flop, and put the little rubber floor mat back on the scooter.  After he was clear from the road I pulled off to the shoulder.

He finally said, "Why did you run me off the road?" I didn't.  I asked if he was okay again. He said, "yeah, this happens alot. This wreck is easier than the rest."  I think I figured out where his other mirrors went.

So, from that I've learned that scooter riders need a good helmet and a set of good mirrors.
