I recently installed a non-vacuum Pingel. Seemed to work. Off I went. Ran out of gas. Switched to reserve. Nothing.  tickedoff Luckily I was within spitting distance of a filling station. Gassed her up and off I went.

I got her home and pulled the fuel line. Good flow in the on position. No flow in the off position. Good flow in the reserve position. However, when the fuel level gets down to the reserve level, and below, I still get some flow. Not full flow like the reserve position but some flow. Just enough to keep me going until the tank is dry.  tickedoff

I'll talk to Pingel today and I'm sure they'll take care of me. That said, I'll be checking the replacement before riding off into the countryside - that's for sure.

Pingel's initial response was to send the petcock to them and they'd repair it. I wasn't having any of that as it's brand new and I don't want to be sidelined waiting for them to R&R it. They'd cross ship but warned me that if my petcock had a scratch on it then they wouldn't credit me and would only R&R it and then I'd own two - no way. Eventually they agreed to send me a new one, then I return the defective one with no questions asked, and we're good. You can bet I'll test the replacement before I trust the next Pingel to work correctly.

Sounds like the fuel hose might have a bend or the uphill thing we all run into. I installed a fuel filter years ago and had to remove it because I would run out of fuel at a third tank at hiway speeds.

It's not the problem here. I tested the petcock with the fuel line running straight downhill. And the tank took just over 5.3 gallons after I "ran out of gas" so I know it was bone dry.

Just replaced the cover set on my 2000 I/S last summer.  My 1997 Std is still good.   Cool

Yeah, not a good scenario if you're counting on reserve to get you there. This might be a bigger issue for Pingel if ours aren't just sample defects. If my replacement also does this I'll be looking into Golan - and I still have several OEM petcocks laying around that I can default back to.

Interesting, I have a Pingel and have had no issue with it.  I run it in the reserve position all the time and just keep track of the miles to empty in addition to the gauge which has been reliable so far.  When I had to exchange my first Pingel for a slightly different model they gave me no grief whatsoever.

I also run mine on reserve soketimes to make sure it is working and never a problem. Wonder if they made a bad batch?

I leave my pingle on reserve all the time. No problems with fuel flow. As far as reserve goes I have a belly tank and since I have an Interstate I have the fuel gauge as well.

With my Pingle I've hit reserve a few times with no issues and I only went 160 mi. once. I usually refill @ about 140 or so to avoid a fuel situation. Pushing 800 lbs. is definitely out of the question.

So, what's the problem with the Pingel?   They don't flow enough on reserve?    I kinda think it's more a case of operator error than anything else.   Now, if the Pingel drips when it is shut off, that's a real problem, and has always been the reason to go to a Pingel.   Because the stocker leaked when shut off.   Running the engine with the Pingel on reserve tells you nothing!

Lol....even the best manufacturer can produce a few defective parts.  It's no surprise really.  I would be a tad more unhappy about it if it were my bike.  Put a Pingel on 7 or 8 years ago and it is still good as new

Pingel #2 came in today. Same problem as #1. The petcock continues to trickle gas to the carburetor after hitting the reserve level. To reiterate, the issue is that I'll run out of gas and find I don't have any reserve when I switch over.

Now to be clear, and for full disclosure, this is a model 6391-CH unit. It isn't the exact same unit that most Valkyrie owners use. This is on a supercharged Valkyrie and the fuel inlet is down facing. Not that this should explain or excuse this behavior. I'll be sending #1 back tomorrow and hoping that they can fix this problem and return it to me.

Would the vacuum Pingel fix this issue?  If not, why not?

I sent this video to Pingel and am awaiting their insight. They said they thoroughly checked petcock #2 that they sent me and it passed their pressure/vacuum tests. So, it's now their move.

Bon, is that flow happening after the fuel level gets below the "on" position but not switched over to reserve ?

Yes, exactly. The tank has been drained well into the reserve level.

Sure would suck to discover that 20 miles from town you were out of gas.

A cunningly designed limp home mode, just enough gas to idle along but not get on it.

Yes, they should advertise it as a feature!

No further word from them today. I trust their engineers are working it!

Tell me if I'm wrong (I'm sure someone will), but pressure/vacuum in NO WAY is an indication of liquid  flow.

I'm returning Pingel #1 to them for inspection and perhaps rework. They now say that they have two test stations. One is pressure/vacuum and the other is wet. They were indeed surprised at the flow shown in the video and they're not arguing about it being defective. I think there's a happy ending to this saga but I'm beginning to resent the down time. At least I have a second Valkyrie!
