Mutazu MU hard saddlebag modifications

I want to remove the lights from Mutazu MU hard saddlebags.

The bags are made from ABS plastic.

I was thinking I would cut out the light wells, leaving the lip where the trim around the light fits flush into the bag. Then put sheet metal into the recess as a backing for whatever gets used to fill teh remaining recess.

What would one use as a filler?
Standard body putty filler?
Fiberglass?
Is either of these incompatible with ABS?

I am cautious about the body putty filler as it may separate in the future.

I am cautious about the fiberglass as I fear the epoxy resin may be incompatible with the ABS.

Any suggestions?

I found a Popular Mechanics article stating 3M makes FPRM (Flexible Part Repair Material) products for this.

It may be more than I want to go through....

Guess I will just stick with the lights.... Just wish I had a way to arrange both brake/turn signals to them.

You'll be all right using fiberglass.  I would use three layers of mesh on the inside and should be at least two inches larger than the hole itself   Let harden and fill the hole with resin.  All edges and inside need to be roughed up with sandpaper and must be oil & grease free.  Would be nice to have a single layer on the outside but that would required filing and sanding along with body filler

My experience , when I was a teenager, was that regular body filler won't adhere to ABS and will separate. Maybe not at first, but won't last long.

  I just added new bags with lights and had a run- turn-brake controller already.  I tied it in and lights up the back end brightly.
  I have a LED board for the tail light.  If you have the signal light as running lights too they must be red.
