Out with the old...in with the wooohoooo!!!!

Ottawa, Ontario

« on: May 03, 2016, 05:11:20 PM »

Hi guys,

I have decided to change my side bags.  I was going to put a set of Corbins on, but now I am thinking of something else.  My two choices that I am contemplating right now are a set of 1500 Valkyrie bags or a set of Victory Cross Country bags.

I thought I had bought a set of 1500 Valkyrie bags that Jerry found for me on Craigslist, but I have not heard from him since Saturday, and he has not returned any of my emails.  He had them listed in our classifieds for a very short time, so I think he may have sold them to someone else.

I was searching for some other bags when I saw the Victory bags for sale.  My cousin has a Cross Country, and I have always liked the look of them.

I am partial to the Valk bags, but I can't find any that are decent for a decent price.  There is a guy in our classifieds that has a set, but he put the big ugly lights on the back of them.

I would like to know what you guys think.  I know that ultimately it is my decision, but I am curious.
The Victory bags do have some nice flare to them, but I am not sure if they really fit my bike.  I am going to ask my cousin to take one of his off, and see how it looks, but I won't be able to get over there until next month.

Will the Cross Country bags actually fit?  They are huge, one of, if not, the biggest saddlebags out there, and I don't think they will fit.  The Cross Country has a longer rear than our Valkyrie so as to leave passenger and luggage room.

I guess you guys have not looked at Sheffjs posts, did a really good job on mounting the Honda or Champion bags on his bike. So you have an example of how they will look. The Victory bags look taller and you may have a problem with them. So I would check the dimensions first. As for an opinion I think done correctly either should work and look fine. But I know my choice.  Wink

Is there anyone that is good with Photoshop? Take a pic of these Victory bags and place them on the black of the 1800c.  The visual from Hubcap was a game changer for me.  It would be good to see the Victory bag posted here.   Also,  I'm sure a deal will come along. Sorry to say we missed a great one Brian by a day with that deal in Minnesota.  :'(

I use       http://www.searchcraigslist.org

That is Craig's list all US.

Two things...

If you do decide on swapping out your bags ( which I think they look great ). What are you going to sell them for?

This one is for everyone.  Any alternates to our luggage rack?  I feel the spending 155 is a bit much. But it may just be what I have to do.

That is what I have on my valk right now, but I find them too wide.  I want something thinner and deeper.

I will probably sell the bags, and the mounting brackets I made for $200 plus shipping.

I love the look of the Corbin's from the back, but they are just butt ugly to me from the side. I truly was going to overlook that fact but could not overlook the price tag. Hell back in 2003 I almost lost my mind when they wanted $700 for a set of bags for my CBR1100XX.

Yup a bit pricey but when I bought the bike I said to the dealer that I wanted the bags and knew they got a discount so I said split the price with me and Ill buy the bags from you. Still pricey but not quite as bad. I was not going to buy the bike without the bags, I thought the naked look was ugly. I like them since they are not as wide and contoured to the bike, and since they are narrower and I can go around traffic or on the side or just park somewhere that would not have been possible with a wider bag.

If I can't find a good deal on some Honda bags or Victory bags, then the Tsukayu bags are the ones that I will probably get this fall. Someone on here already put a set of those bags on and they do look good but I do prefer the look of the 1500 Valkyrie bags better

I love the look of the Corbin bags , someday I may buy a couple , the price does not bother me .
Unless , I see something more attractive created by someone here

In the meantime , this is what I bought/plan to use cuzz it adds  visibility  to my rear

When I bought my bike I almost went for the F6B because of the storage space on the bike. That bike was still at 18k. But I didn't like some things on it and felt it was a stripped Goldwing for 18k. So when I bought my bike and it could be had for 12 k out the door I decided luggage and seat and windshield was a must and considered lack of them as the discount for options not included on the Valkyrie.  I knew what I wanted and needed to ride comfortably and how I wanted my bike to look and the prices of comparative bikes. So that is why when I bought my bike I had already designed it in my head and knew that as an everyday rider what I needed to have on it. One of my better decisions by the way. I was not going to buy a bike and knowing this and peacemeal it down the line. When you buy a car you don't buy just the body and decide to add windshield and bumpers heater and ac later you buy the finished product. So why do we buy motorcycles differently?

You know what you need to ride comfortably, what is it worth to you to have a Goldwing like you want laid out like you want so you can ride in style and comfort. I still with all the addons consider this to be a deal and one of the best finds in the motorcycle world . I have waited a long time for a bike like this and plan to keep it for a long time so the joy and peace of mind has been more than worth it.

Its my thinking on outfitting my bike and why I don't consider the price of Corbin bags or addons to the Valkyrie out of line. We bought a Goldwing in engineering and paid less than most high end bikes.

A BMW was 26k a Harley can be 22k the Goldwing 23k the F6B 18k the Valkyrie at 12k is a steal. So if you buy the Valk know the comparison of bikes you are riding in. Plan the upgrades accordingly and the bike will make you proud in owning one of the best bikes on the road for the least amount of money and outfitted the way you want. Thanks Honda for making my dream bike at a reasonable price.  cooldude cooldude

If you are buying the bike new from the dealer you are spending a bit of money make your money and buying position count for you. Negotiate all options either into the price or have the dealer discount the parts you want on the bike. There are many dealers that want to sell bikes if the one you picked wont deal and give a fair price then find another that will.

@Robert : a GW for 23k ?!  crazy2 The tag in France is 34k (airbag) !
But even at this incredible price, I wouldn't buy one, the bike is way too heavy for my 143 lbs and too big in the city (not to mention the wallet)  coolsmiley

I have now 25,000 mls with the Valk and I tell everyone (BMW, KTM, GS) that I'm really happy with this bike. Compared to a BMW, I've paid less than 350 $ for maintenance (12,000 km, say hello to the dealer & 24,000 km - check the valves, I knew it would be useless). I know that with a BMW, it would have been 4 times this amount in 18 months. I have had no problems at all whatsoever and I wanted to check today if the bike is still running like day one. 5,500 rpm on 5th gear was easy on the highway hill I know, I could do better obviously - a Yamaha MT-09 can do that too and faster - but I don't care  angel

When I'll have 50,000 mls on the clock, I may change the rear shock absorber (considering the economy I made in comparison with my former BMWs  Grin). The french EMC are nice they say (never had to change the shocks on my BMWs though I used to keep them until 60,000 mls) but the ÖHLINS for the Valk are not as  expensive as I thought. It's sooo smooth to ride with Öhlins !  cooldude

When I got my bike there wernt alot of options ... I saw a set of corbins,WOW to much $ and besides the corbins dont have much storage and you cannt mount a carrier and open the lid on the corbins. I did get the Honda bags, and backrest, that gave me threaded mount point for a home made carrier (if needed for cross country trips) and points to mount a Viking hard trunk, right behind me to use as a backrest, and the bike doesnt look as top,or rear heavy,as one mounted on a rear carrier, But of course I ride only solo on long trips, some times for short day rides I take my Lady friend but not much. Im not good at posting pictures on this site ,,,, but I can e-mail pictures if any one is interested----- my e-mail is    blondie5052@gmail.com   just a side note Im taking a friend up into Wisconsin today so he can ride home on the 1997 Bumble Bee Valkyrie he just bought, so if any one is interested in a nice older Goldwing I know where you can find one..... ride safe- ride on life is good
