I ve been thinking of going dark on my IS, I've heard mention of having to do a nut modifation to prevent rubbing. What exactly is that, and is it something I can do?

I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, but what does that tab do? I have never removed a fender off of a bike.

Don't need to remove the entire fender, just the rear section. And you're only interested in the nut cage on the right rear of the fender rails. By removing it, it gives more clearance for the larger tire. Not all bikes need it done, but if you're going to a c/t and the wheel is out of the way I'd just do it in case it might need doing later. On my bike, I just used a carriage bolt and inserted it from the inside and put a nut on the outside for a spacer, then placed the bag mount over it with another nut. Ended up doing the same thing on the front bolts as well, only those you thread in from the outside into the existing plate nut witch is welded in place. Do that on all four fender bolts and next time you want to drop the bags, just remove the nuts and the bag mounts slip right off, no removing the long bolts and trying to realign the fender to reinstall them. If you're interested, I can take some pictures of what I'm talking about and post them later today. It's referred to as a "Bag Drop Kit" previously sold by a member now in retirement. You can make your own kit quite easily.

Some darkside tires don't require the mod, e.g. the Austone Taxi Tire.

When I went DS, I bought a Michelin HydroEdge.  I ended up doing a double Nut Cage job.  It rubbed the front Nut Cage.   Not all 205's are the same width.  The one I am running now is about 3/8 of an inch narrower.  Wouldn't have had to do the front on with it.   Just saying.

Don't have to remove any fender.  Once up on the lift and the tire off/out (to get the car tire on), just slide up in there and do it.  One side stress flexes off clean, the other side leaves sharp edges and must be filed.  Good time to check for any rear wiring rubs.  I just replaced the big clunky square nut with a normal thin nut, but once the cage is off, reusing the big square nut is probably OK.  (I just did not want to have to take it all off again if it wasn't.

did the nut cage mod when i went dark side 6 years ago. easy mod. but one other mod might be needed. on my ct when i rode 2 up the tire was rubbing some thing, toke a few but found that even with the nut cage removed the right side of the tire would ever so lightly rubon the side wall when the wife was on and we hit some of those big dips in the road. the tire was hitting the big square nut on the inside. to fix it i just ground down the nut to half its thickness. no rubbing any more.

Everyone who runs a 205 CT should do the Nut-Cage-Mod.  A very few have also had to do the Fender-Washer-Spacer-Mod.... where you shim the fender mount to move it over a bit.  Uniformity of manufacture and assembly can still result in a rare fender being a half inch off.
