Hi All,

Although my throttle cables appear fine I don't like the idea of road side stranding should one fail, especially when touring over the channel.

Had thought about buying a pair of spares, but seems an expensive way to do this if buying Honda OEM (any suggestions for options available from UK supplier ?)

I could just replace with new as a default as these are some 35k miles and 15 years old now, but they seem fine.

So I was wondering about just carrying one of these kits where you get lengths of inner cable, and a range of solderless fixing's in differing sizes so you seem to just pull the broken cable out of the outer case, push the new inner through and attach the solderless ends as a temporary get me home or to end of tour type fix.

Has any one actually used these (Slinky Glide is the one Wemoto offer) and got any comment ?

Cheers

I can't remember ever hearing of a throttle cable failure.  Not saying it hasn't happened, just don't remember it being a big issue, so probably not a lot of collective experience here on that system.

If it's a concern to you, take the kit with you.

I've had a throttle cable fail on me once. I was close to home, so not a big deal, because I carry spare A and B cables with me in my "long trip" tool kit. It makes no sense to me to want to be fooling around with some cable kit on the side of the road, finding out it doesn't work as well as I thought, when replacing an OEM cable in my garage is already a pain in the neck, best done with the fuel tank off.  If the kit doesn't work, you're stuck until the local dealer can bring in a cable for you.

Having two 10mm wrenches with you to work the jam nuts at the bottom end is helpful.

I've had one fail on a trip: http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,57991.0.html

My recommendation is to get a spare set and tuck them in the saddlebag.  They take up almost no room coiled and upright against the side of the bag.

My concern about the no-solder type is they must use mechanical clamping of some kind on the cable, probably by tightening a little screw.  I've never had much success in getting such a connection tight enough to hold.
