There is nothing like riding a Fat Girl....

Darlington, SC

« on: September 22, 2009, 11:55:06 AM »

I bought a set of electric horns at an auto parts store and mounted near where the OEM horn was located.  The problem is that they filled with water in all the rain we had on the Trail of Tears ride over the weekend and sounded like a frog blowing his nose after only a new miles.  I do not want an air horn but like the sound of my wife's 2006 Goldwing horns.  Any suggestions as to what to buy next?  I have heard that some have success mounting new horns in the pods on the IS.  Mine is a 2001 Interstate.

I bought my Valk and found out the first time i put it on a jack that it has (4) car horns belly mounted. The guy before me bent up some tin, ran the wires, and screwed the whole deal to a crossmember. I love it, it's clean, and loud.

Mounted a pair of 2003 Lincoln Town Car horns on all 3 of our Hondas. All swingarm mounted & used a relay. The reason I used Town Car horns was the perfect V-shaped bracket that mounts them. All you have to do is make sure you rotate the horn openings AWAY from the back tire. Don't ask me how I know that! Embarrassed Welded a 5/16ths x 1" bolt & a spacer to the swingarm, fasten the horn assembly on with a nylock nut, wire 'em up and hit the LOUD button!  cooldude
Not too loud so as not to startle our large population of "senior drivers" down here. No air horn wind up either, just an instant, familiar car horn sound. With the horns unshrouded by sheetmetal under the bike, car horns are significantly louder than in the car.

Saved my bacon more than once!!

I have heard that some have success mounting new horns in the pods on the IS.  Mine is a 2001 Interstate.
I've put a Stebel Nautilus in the right side pod, even though there's a voltmeter in the same pod.  I imagine it would be difficult if you have the pod lights as well, though.  You still have to point it downward.  The pod doesn't protect it quite enough if you get in a real hard rain.  I had the gargling frog sound come out of mine when I first put it on pointing upwards.
As for mounting, I just used a homemade bracket, and bolted it up to one of the radiator bolts.  The radiator is rubber mounted, so make sure you ground it separately.  Might take a few tries to get it to sit properly, and let the pod fit around it, but sounds great after you get it.
I want to put another in the left pod, just for added volume, and symmetry.  The sound definitely is louder on the right side, and I want to blast people on each side if necessary.
