Has any one ever cut the tubes off flush with the plugs and plug the holes in the plugs with J&B Weld?  Lot of plug, plugging.  Smiley Plate and gasket on bottom holes. That is the reason for desmog. Right? Just plug the holes. Am I missing some thing? Thanks.

Yep, mine too....and I've done numerous others that way. I usually will put some pieces of paper shop towel in the tubes and use the JB Qwik Weld. The paper keeps the weld from running down the tube and leaving a hole. I go do other stuff for 10-15 minutes then come back and put another layer on and forget it. By the time I'm done with whatever else I'm doing on the bike, it's ready to ride....the JB Qwik is hardened.

Add me to that list... JB Weld and a cheap Auto Part Store head gasket cut to shape with a pair of scissors.

Worked great!  cooldude

I have cut off, then flattened the tubes and folded them over.  Vice grips works for that. Used a short piece of bolt with JB weld slathered on it, and plugged the tubes that were hard to fold over.

I make plugs, I don't trust the JB Weld.

I took all the tubes and lines off when I did it.  Biggest hassle was dropping the left side exhaust.  I had  already bought the freeze plugs, vacuum tubing and caps.  A long, 5mm (I think) allen wrench with a ball head will make it easier.  I bought one after doing my desmog...

Here is a photo of everything that came off--

Not required to remove everything, but I had the air box out and needed the room where the Pair valves were for the Dan Mark fuel shut off.  The shoptalk guide looked very intimidating, but once you get started and see what is actually being removed/plugged, it wasn't that difficult.
