I'm trying to plan a Keywest trip for January or February and trying to do it pretty cheap.   Does anyone know of any primitive campgrounds around Marathon or just a little north/south of there to do some tent camping?  I've looked some, but have only been through there once and thought someone here might know somewhere off the top of their head.  Thanks!

Yes there is camping. I've seen it as I passed through. I keep thinking I'm going to go back down there and camp but haven't yet. Don't know any details.

On Key West itself we stayed in a motel, Blue Lagoon I believe it was, that was reasonably priced. But I haven't been down in a while now.

As I recall there is camping at the Bahia Honda State Park.  However, I would imagine that you will have a hard time finding a vacancy in February unless they take reservations.

Been to the Keys dozens of times but only stayed at a campground once. There is a K.O.A. on Sugarloaf Key in the Lower Keys that was very nice. All types of camping, from tents to motorhomes. Very good location with showers, a boatramp, etc. We stayed there during a lobstering trip. Since we no longer hunt the bugs all our trips down are just sightseeing & pleasure so hotels/motels are what we use.
Bahia Honda is a state park but I'm not sure of the camping rules there.

That time of year is hard to find a vacancy.  I always go in October and stay at the Inn at Key West it has the largest swimming pool in Key West with tiki bar rooms are real nice.  Rooms at that time are around $130.00 but after October they double in price.

This is probably going to be just a me trip, because I don't think my wife will be able to go.  I just want to go down midwinter and do some riding and some laying out in the sun.  Since it's just me, I'm happy to camp out and save my $ for better things, like seafood!  Probably won't be at the campsite much except to sleep, but would like something around Marathon so I'm about halfway between Keywest and the mainland.  Thanks for all your suggestions, think I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger and make some reservations.   cooldude

Dave,
Your best bet would be Bahia Honda State Park (800-326-3521)  It is about the only campground that has a natural beach, most of the keys have mangroves.
Sugarloaf Key Resort KOA Campground (800-562-7731)
is probably nicer it has a pool and most amenities that KOA is famous for.
Good Luck on the trip & take plenty of pictures

John Pennycamp is a nice state park also, have stayed there a few times. Just don't leave any food put,
the raccoons are plentiful there.
