Hey guys, I am about finished with rebuilding the forks on my 97 standard. While filling each tube with the Honda 10w suspension fluid I read the fine print on the back of the bottle. It states that their fluid can be used where ATF is recommended. So my question is, is their fluid repackaged ATF at a much higher price?

I don't think any of us have had it chemically analyzed, but I know I've had good luck with Honda fork oil...

there is zero industry standards when it comes to fork fluid weights. ATF is a known to be a 7.5w oil. The '81 CB900C uses ATF in the forks and shocks. I posted some info before about fork oil, suggest looking for the posts.

Many forks use ATF. ATF is 7.5 wgt so the difference is marginal.
Whether Honda fork oil is ATF, I don't know. But, I wouldn't think twice about using it in a fork, but, certainly wouldn't put it in my Vehicles transmission.

ATF has always generally been accepted as far as I know to be 7.5. The way things have changed there is probably ATF in some other close viscosities. I just meant that ATF could be used if a bit lighter weight oil was wanted than 10 wgt.

My mind was still back in the '80s when it was 5wt and I was rebuilding the forks and shocks for my CB900C, but now the modern ATF is pretty much 7.5wt. I don't think any of it is 5wt today.
