Replacing my grips with Avons all went well until I went to hook up the throttle cables, noticed in the removal they came off hard, problem is there is no adjustment left on the cable on the top one,the only one with the adjustment, so I couldn't reconnect them! So I figured I'll have to ck the bottom end, so off comes the tank and I can't seem to get any slack there either, about 1/8 to 1/4" to short it seems like, I thought I was kind of mechanical but I am stumped on this one! Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks Guys.

You can just prop the front of the tank up. You only get slack at the right grip by loosening the handlebar clamp and sliding the bars to the left. Be careful to not scratch the tank.

I am not sure if this will help with throttle cable lengths and adjustment, but if you loosen the riser clamp(s) (pad the tank) and slide the bars left, this will give you more slack to work and reassemble.  Make sure they go back to exact center after.

Eric beat me to it.

There is more adjustment at the other end of the cables, underneath the tank.

After a lot of screwing around I had to take the cable out of the bracket on the lower end to get the length I needed to get it hooked up! Kinda Jerry rigged it with ty wraps for now, seems to work, but would like to get a new cable a half inch or so longer, if any of you guys out there would know the length of the cable it would save me pulling mine out to measure it befor I have a new one! Any help would be much appreciated! Thank, Jim.. ( not sure if the model makes a difference or if there all the same
but it's a 97 tourer)

Why did you bother with this post and then not use the good advice you received?  Dismount  the handlebars, move them to the left and hook up the cables property

I think you must have them routed the wrong way.

I have changed grips on Valkyries several times and never moved the handlebars.  All the slack that is needed can be obtained by using the adjustments on both ends of the cables.  It is a little difficult, but it definitely can be done. The only reason for needing longer cables is because of installing risers that are more than two inches longer than standard.  Even then, rerouting the cables usually will give enough slack...Jim Smiley

Hey Chris: The kuryakyn throttle grip comes either with or without the inner sleeve that the cables attach to, depending on the model and part number. If you got the one supplied with the inner sleeve I think the tab the cable ends fit into is wider...takes up more circumference, than the original Honda one, which is just wide enough to accept the two cable ends, and very close to each other. The wider Kuryakyn will "shoulder out" against the stop in the housing earlier, with the cable end hole further away from the cable entry point, thus  requiring more length on the pull cable than is available. The solution is to remove the grip and grind off most of the surplus tab on the 'pull' side, leaving only 1/8 to 3/16 of material until you get to the cable end hole.

this may or may not apply to your situation, but if it does it is a much easier fix than buying custom made cables.

I just did my grips and had no issues with cables.  I would go back and see what needs to be put back like it was.
