Has anybody installed the 36" long truck stacks on the exhaust while they are mounted to the bike?  Roll Eyes

Yes!

I was going to stop there just out of orneriness  Wink but decided to add a couple issues to your approach. Do not loosen anything such as the muffler hangers or headers. If you do, it allows sudden impacts of your hammer/mallet to cause a header stud to sustain sideways shocks....and break. First, you have to be certain the muffler surface is smooth by grinding off the various factory protrusions after removing the outer sleeves. You'll need to cut approx. 2" wide slot on the inside of the stacks to allow them to slide over the muffler hangers. Lube the surfaces real good, outer surface of the mufflers and inner of the stacks. Place a chunk of 2x4 over the end and use a good mallet. Be patient, once on they ain't coming off.

Awesome!! Thanks for the tips. What do you guys use as a lubricant to help them slide on? I have heard dish/bar soap, WD-40.

I have them on the bike I bought. At first I didn't like the increase in volume and bought some stock to put on.

However I've grown to like them especially from about 2,750 rpm on. At around 5,000 rpm the bike starts to sound like an F-16 on after burner, it really howls.

I did mine on the bike.  Parked bike with front wheel against the wall and strap the front brake lever tight.  used dish soap as a lube vice oil.  Smelled real pretty for the first 100 miles.  I went thru at least half dozen pieces of 2x4 and 2x6 in the 18" length range.  After four or five good whacks, they were firewood.  Saw that MarkT had done it so I thought I was safe following the expert.  Kinda intimidating but once you get a good feel for the right swing of the hammer, should go well.

Awesome! Thanks for the help. Looks like I will be ordering some 36" truck stacks from Airflo in the near future.

For those who installed truck stacks. Did it change your exhaust sound much? With the stacks extending several inches farther back did you notice a lower sound while riding?

I only put on 18" replacement tips from Air Flow (my favorite flat cuts), but yes the farther back (longer) the less sound to the rider.  Though slash cuts aimed down, bounce noise off the pavement (a little).

But, you need to know that as soon as you go much longer than stock, the greater the opportunity to drag them in back, departing from aprons, especially if you are turning while on the apron.  Also if you back down on curbs, they can hit the curb if it is tall enough, and if the curb is short enough not to hit, and they clear it, then when you throw it on the kickstand, you can lay the left/low pipe on the curb. And less than 13" shocks will also increase the opportunity to drag them.  I would not run my exhaust longer than say 2" past the end of the bags (but a lot of guys have longer than that).

I even have slight rubs on the bottom of my 18 inchers just because they are 4" round to the end, and not squeezed flat like IS tips.  Both my interstates have the 18" flat cuts, one with piggies cut and the other pure stock.  The tips alone created just a bit more resonance or rumble over stock tips, but overall not that much of a difference.

12 1/2" slash cut and piggie's cut off. Got rid of the tinny sound that stock tip produced because the piggies were cut by previous owner which was annoying. Very pleased with the throater sound. When the season is done they're going to chrome shop.
