I recently purchased a 98 Valk standard that's in perfect condition but definitely needs new tires. After reading about tires in the "FAQ" section, I set out looking for some Avon Vipers, which seem to be pretty highly rated for the Valk. When I started to search the Internet for prices, I couldn't locate any- it appears that these may no longer be in production. Does anyone know? I'm now considering Avon Cobras as they appear to be pretty highly rated. I'm mainly interested in good handling characteristics, a quiet ride and long tread life. I'm not concerned about ultra high speeds as I'm an old fart and don't expect to ever be taking it over 75 or 80 (doubtful I'd even go that fast, unless I had to put some Harley guys in their rightful place in my rear view mirror) I would welcome any opinions. Thanks.

I think its Avon VENOM tires is what used to be available. They seemed to have a higher than normal bad tire rate. Since Avon changed to the Cobras, I haven't heard any reports of bad tires. I have a front Cobra on the Cobra bike and it is quieter than the previous E-3. I had no complaints with the handling or the wear of the E-3 (got over 20K front and back every time) but once I went to stock pipes I did notice they were loud

My mistake in original post- it was the Avon "Venom" that seemed to be highly rated in the FAQ's. I'm pretty sure I'll go with Avon Cobras. Any additional input greatly appreciated.

I just put one on the rear and running 42 psi. Still running the Exedra up front but the two are doing fine together. The Cobra has the better feel over the Exedras which are also noisey. Extremely well mannered I just hope to get at least 12,000 mi. out of it. Probably be putting one on the front in about 2500 mi. Exedra is at 13,300 mi. with .070 tread left.

I am on my 3rd set of Cobra's now. 42 PSI front and rear. I average about 10,000 miles per set. Great handling tires.

beautiful bike! you must have rough roads........that's fully one half the mileage we get (myself and a couple others) in Florida and we ride the center of the tire way more cause of lack of curves so we hardly ever get to use that "free rubber" on the sides

I live in the land of curves for sure. Funny when I get ready for a new set the center of my tires are still like new and the sides are shot. About half of our rides start with running 421 through the Shady Valley then there are several good routes back to Hickory. Your red and white is one of the sharpest I have seen. It's way cool to have bike's with that much age on them still look like new. I tell people mine is a 99 and they can't believe it.

I've been using Avons for years on my Valkyrie and Goldwings. First the Venom and now the Cobra. Never had an issue until the last set I bought for my GL1800 Goldwing. Developed a bad wobble in the front end after a few thousand kilometres on the new Avons. Inspected the tires and noticed some uneven wear on the rear tire but nothing obviously amiss. Over time, the wobble got worse. I finally got around to removing the rear wheel and discovered two large bulges on the rear tire.
I replaced the tire, again with another Avon, and the wobble is gone. Not sure what caused the problem with the tire as I regularly check the tire pressure. Always ran the rear tire at 41-42 psi, as per Avon's recommendation.
Have heard numerous reports of this happening to Avons, however, i'm sure the number of reports are relatively small compared to the number of non-faulty tires on the road. Just FYI.

I have been back and forth through Hickory on my Valk for the last two weekends. The first trip was to Knoxville-ish Tennessee. Last weekend (yesterday) was to Maggie Valley. Hickory is my unofficial halfway point to Maggie Valley/Lake Junaluska/Cherokee. If I get another weekend day this summer with nothing to do I will ride up to Cherokee and have lunch at Granny's, or if I get out early enough maybe a late breakfast at Joey's in Maggie Valley. The Interstate has long legs so, I usually go well over 100 miles between stops. Yesterday I gassed up in Black Mountain and didn't stop again till Clemmons.
