We left early Wednesday morning, opting to take the long way up into Maine by going north up 91 into St. Johnsbury, VT and then cutting over Rt. 2 along the top of the Whites.  Eventually we popped out in Palmyra, ME and picked up 95 to Millinocket.  We rolled into town and hit the Hannaford for some provisions and then spent the night at the Big Moose Inn right at the Ambajejus / Millinocket Lake intersection.

Thursday morning early we packed up and headed out the Golden Road towards Lobster Lake in the shadow of Mt. Katahdin. The road wasn't in that bad of shape but as you can imagine, my little car loaded with gear and a big fishing kayak on top stood out like a fly in a glass of milk.  We stopped at the Caribou checkpoint and registered in, then continued the journey.  The 50 miles from Big Moose to Lobster took us close to 2 hours.

Don't remember what time we put in at the boat launch on Lobster River but I do know I had a 1.25 hour trip in the kayak to get to the Ogden North campsite.  Had to fight some pretty good wind and rollers along the way once I got into the lake.  Slowly some other guys made their way in and we would up having a camp setup with 10 people.  Given it was a boat in trip we had some extra gear, good hooch and the site was set up nicely. The weather could not have been better with clear skies the entire time.  Felt strange not to have cold and rain!

I fished a bit and never had any luck with the landlocked salmon or lake trout.  I mostly trolled but just couldn't seem to connect.  I ran into an old timer in a nice Grand Laker who had managed to catch two shorts the day prior but that was it for him in his 3 days out. I caught some small fish (yellow perch, whites, chubb) but that was about it.

All in all the trip was great but we did manage to get two flat tires on the Golden Road (one in and one out).  I was supposed to head into the office today but instead I'm opting to clean up all my gear and do some auto repair (lost a fog light, have 486 pounds of dust and dirt in my engine compartment and really should clean and re oil up my K&N as well as change the cabin air filter).

The north Maine woods sure is a lovely place to be!

Thanks for the picturesque description of your adventures, Chris, it does sound like fun. Sorry you were unable to acquire any lunkers, but there's always next time...  cooldude

Nice spot to escape to Chris.  The Golden Road can be tough miserable trail at times.
Timing is everything when trying to entice a fish to eat what you are presenting....
Some times you can fool'em, and some times they ain't interested.
Hopefully you returned home with a clear head and clean slate....
