Once after work today and again after being at home for about 2.5 hrs.
Hit the starter button and it clicks but starter does not turn.
I fiddled withthe gearshift to make sure it's in neutral. After 8 or ten tries the starter eventually kicks in and it starts.
Has a recent manual rebuilt petcock with no vacuum line and I put a solenoid in to help prevent hydrolock right after I got the bike.
No fuel in the oil.
Just got home and I barely touch the start button and she fires right up.
Need pointers.........I've had the bike 3 years and she has about 38K on her.
Carbs rebuilt after the original owner had hydrolock at 20k. I bought it right after that with receipts for all the work at the HONDA stealer.

Research starter button maintenance. Probably just needs cleaning.

The 'dreaded CLANK' is the sound of a fuel-lock. A click is a bad or dirty connection. I agree with the fellas regarding a dirty start switch or a possible loose battery connection or bad ground.[near left foot peg]

Start your bike where you can see what the head light is doing. It is suppose to turn off when you push the button, and turn right back on after you release it.
The button disconnects the head light circuit, and energizes the starter side.
If the contacts are corroded, or more likely, the grease in with the springs is old, and holding back the springs from pushing the plate to make contact.
They already referred you to the Shop Talk, there is also a lot of search of melted switches too, but poor performance is the most likely issue.

Well I guess it was more than a click! Fuel dripping from left muffler after start! Took car to work. Dang it....carb needle seat?

if you can shut it down and start it with no issues after a couple of minutes but not after a couple of hours then your Battery is the likely cause.

Did it crank without starting? Fuel in the exhaust means it made it through the cylinder without burning

You sure it was fuel and not just moisture?

Yeah, I'm sure it was fuel....engine did not turn over before finally starting so there must have been some fuel in one of the cylinders. Not much came dripped out under the muffler maybe an ounce or two at most?
Pulled the fuse on the DanMarc and let the motor run it out b4 going to work. Came home, turned gas back on and she started right up......no clicking. Dumped a bottle of B12 in 3/8 of a tank and went for a 10 mile ride. She's soaking now with the gas turned off........only what's in the carbs. We'll see what happens tomorrow morning. If she starts w/o prollums I'll fill up the tank.

You seem to be describing two different problems. Carb or fuel issues will not cause the starter to "ClicK" or not turn the motor (unless it is hydrolocked). Clicking is generally caused by a low battery or a bad connection. These can be intermittent. Fuel issues present as no start or rough running engine generally. Fuel is the exhaust is usually a result of flooding the engine.

I hear ya Paladin, maybe it was a little more than clicking. I don't know, maybe the starter was engaging and trying to push out the little bit of gas that had collected in the combustion chamber. When I saw the gas leaking out the muffler, my mind went immediately to leaky float needles. Since I did the B12 treatment it's been fine........time will tell if there is something else going on here.
