Got a great deal on a 98 Tourer, my first Valk and she runs like a top. I intend to use this bike for longer distance, two up, highway rides. This bike has gotten to 77K with minimal molestation but someone punched out the baffles in an otherwise stock exhaust. At highway speeds, the exhaust note is pretty deafening. At this stage in my life, I was looking for a bike that only stimulates the senses when I choose to do so. Yup, gettin old. Does anyone have any creative and or economical fixes for this short of replacing the entire exhaust system? Thanks in advance, Chris.

Are the the piggys cut off on each side too. (the three pipes that extend to the back of the exhaust). The removal of them will increase the sound factor too. There was someone selling replacement piggy pipes somewere on this forum. You might have to replace the muffler if all else fails.

Nothing appears to be cut off, three outlets visible through the end cap. Shining a light inside, I see a smaller hole that looks like it could have been drilled in each pipe. I'm new to these machines so I don't know what's normal. Is muffler replacement doable without welding? If so, can you recommend a quieter replacement for a stock setup? Thanks a lot!

I haven't looked at a stock set lately, but as I recall the piggies aren't straight. If you can see that rear baffle and a hole drilled in it, then I'm thinking the piggies have been cut.

You're prolly right. The former owner must be hard of hearing with a heavily calloused butt. 77k on the stock seat! OEM mufflers priced at $190 a piece! any suggestions? Thanks.

If that exhaust system is in good shape for $190 a side, assuming that's what you meant by mufflers, I think that price is about the going ask for used.

OK should have searched the tech board more before I posted. This bike has undergone a piggyectomy causing it to be loud at high RPM. Someone did a clever fix with tapping screws and exhaust cement. Just no clue where to score a set of these porcine particulars

You also might like to add your location to your profile. If your piggies have been cut, you might also want to remove the rear shroud, and add on a straight section of 4" exhaust pipe, and add a marine slip-in silencer. Thanks Gordon. Actually I had already read your post on piggy mods, thanks for that. I found a really nice unmolested exhaust set for 300 on ebay and jumped on it. I'll keep the current one for when I hit the lottery and send it out to have it made into gatling guns!! I'm in upstate NY, profile edited. Thanks again for all the advice. You guys are awesome

Following this thread.. My 1999 Interstate has the 4 inch pipes with next to nothing baffles. Much louder than I wish it were. I need to find some better baffles.

I know whis isn't the answer you are looking for, but I ride with a club that has been overpopulated with loud, obnoxious, underpowered, "American" V-twins for many years. Since we spend a lot of time riding in formation, I learned to use a set of triple flange rubber earplugs. I didn't need them, of course, when I rode my late, great, (but recently totaled) 2000 Interstate with the stock pipes...
Now that I replaced her with a 99 interstate with a supercharger, the loudness lives within, and I have taken to wearing them whenever I ride her.

I just did the "piggie" replacement yesterday. I pretty simple job, with satisfying results. The noise at higher RPMs is much lower and less "droney" Mark T includes the relevant thread in printed form when you order a set of piggie plates.
