The bike starts but I don't have my headlight. The bulb is good as well as the headlight fuse. Even though the bike starts I'm leaning towards the starter switch as being the culprit. What do you guys and gals think? As always, any help will be greatly appreciated.          Roll Eyes

P.S. Forgot to mention that I have a new battery and I bought a new bulb and the new bulb did not work.

Yep. Starter switch most likely.

There's two sets of contacts, one does the headlight, one does the starter.

Easy fix!

Daniel, that's the way I was leaning, towards the switch. I will do the maintenance on the switch tomorrow and post my results. Thanks again....      Smiley

Just happened to me on the way to the CBR last weekend.  Noticed my reflection on the back of a pickup truck, at a stop light, and I saw my two Rivco Spots, but ho head light.  Tried the High Beam, still no light.  Knowing how the starter button works, I worked the button in and out a few times at the next gas stop, and it came on  cooldude  One more 'winter project'.

A quote from a Honda mechanic buddy of mine with over 25 years of experience comes to mind... "Why would you want to do that - taking money out of my pocket" - with regard to doing the Starter Safegaurd outlined by Chet.

If you own a Standard or Tourer that does not have this mod, you are destined to have a starter button problem. It is more than a  cleaning issue as the miles and electrical load have their way with the starter switch plastic. It actually melts down the plastic enough that I had to replace my switch on my first Valk. That is when I did my first mod from Chet's notes. I have seen it on VTX 1800's too - stock with low miles!

Seems like you were at that wrench party at Gary's, Victor, when we did the mod on David's headlight circuit?

Honda put a relay on each headlight bulb of the Interstate models.

Starter Safegaurd outlined by Chet. Looks like Chet has also included some updated info on the GoldWing 1800 switch that may interest some of you older guys if you have enough energy to scroll some.

If you do get stranded enough that the switch won't work at all you can jump across a couple of contacts under the right side cover of the Valk. Just be certain the bike is in neutral as this technique goes around the kickstand, clutch, bank angle sensor, and neutral safety switches.

HTH. ~Jeff

Jeff, I don't remember being at that wrench party. Not saying that I wasn't there. I just don't remember it. LOL          2funny

Just as suspected. Did the starter button maintenance procedure and I'm back in business. Thanks to all that replied. It was my first time doing the procedure and it was as easy as described. Thanks again.      cooldude

Must be the weather, I had the same problem last night. Having read the forums and knowing of the starter switch issue i cut the bike off and worked the switch a few times, presto, headlight came on.

I have to say reading the forums has been a lifesaver on a couple of occasions. I recently did the vac lines on the bike. First real ride I took it quit running. I had lost some fuel when the tank was off so I opened the tank to check the fuel level and switched to reserve. I rode to the next station and fueled up. A few miles down the road it happened again. I opened the tank and heard the whoosh as the tank vented. I pulled out the spare key and rode the rest of the way home venting the tank every so often. I am not sure I would have thought of a kinked vent line had I not read about the problem several times on the forum. Lucky I always carry a spare key as I did not have anything to jam under the cap to keep it gapped.
