How do I get the height I need to install the longer shock with the shorter one still on the other side?
Thanks.

Just jack the bike off the ground enough so you can take the old shocks off and then jack it more to install the new one's .

I have Big Bill Ferguson at my casa tearing into my bikes.

He has a wonderful bike table, jacks, tools, lights, fans, and a big lazy boy in his trailer.

With the finest tech equipment at hand, he asked if I had a flat blade shovel.  Sure.

To just raise the rear tire/wheel a little bit to line up shocks and mounts perfectly (or axle to swingarm), he slides the shovel under the tire, and voila' you have the perfect long lever with built in fulcrum, requiring little effort; no bending, stooping, lifting, jack fiddling, hernia, or sweating.

Gob smacked, again.   Grin   (though a second set of hands is necessary)

Interestingly, I found a roof shingle-stripping "shovel" is a really handy tool for many levering needs.  Has a built-in fulcrum welded on the back of it.
