As I took off the clutch case cover to rebuild the clutch this fell down from somewhere....

I took it to the dealer who rebuilt the clutch and mainly works on Wings and Valks and he said "I have no F^&kin idea.. never seen on of those before"... Does not go inside the case in the clutch area, not part of the clutch slave.... looks like a vent filter or something..

Any help would be great....... but maybe this is the proverbial left over part that always comes up..LOL

That looks like a smaller version of the transmission fluid filter on my old Mercedes.
Funny thing is, I don't remember seeing that part on my Valk when I replaced my rear cover a couple years ago.

But it does show on this parts fiche. It's called an oil pump strainer.
see parts 4 and 5 on this schematic:

Good luck.

Actually, here's a pic of that area and it shows where that strainer goes:

Very important for that to be installed. It keeps rivets out of the oil system when the damper plate fails.

Muther F&*(er.......

Its not shown in the Clymer manual   or listed anywhere I could find and I just got it All back the F^&k together and took it for a ride just an hour ago.....

I won't have to worry about the rivets as the old Damper I had in the bike was fine and I installed a new one.....

Opinions????? minimal risk????  It would only keep big stuff out as the holes are like a millimeter on the strainer side....

If I have to put it back in its several hour job and Id have to put in a new gasket in ..etc etc....

Im thinking leaving it out........

It was American Wings Powersports in Wayne.. they have usually done me right in the past and they will mount a car tire for $30.... complete with New metal 90 Degree stem...

I've known Rob the owner for a long time.....

they forgot to put it in? why are you going to pay them again for having them do thing right?

i would go back there, explain where it goes and demand it to be put back in right away. if youre unlucky and that so called rivets fail, they wont pay you for the repairs.

I think Brad put it back together . As I read it, he had the shop put the clutch pack together.

No, They did not do the work on the bike and ARE NOT to blame....

I do almost all the work on my bike myself.... the only reason I go to that dealer is because they will mount a car tire, don't charge a disposal fee, And I pulled the clutch myself and brought them the Clutch Pack to press apart, because I didn't have the tools and didn't want to make or buy them... They only charged me $100 to mount the tire, put a new solid 90 degree valve stem in and rebuild the clutch pack with the parts I brought in..... More than fair... Most place want at least $40 just to mount a tire around here off the bike.

I have used them off and on for things I can't do for many years.... I have known the current owner, Rob for more than 20 years... he used to work at a dealer in Ann Arbor years ago. Lately they have been a little sloppy on the last thing I had done, but they just didn't clean up all the grassy marks from doing a valve adjustment....

They usually do a good job when I do need something.. so its not their fault.. he just did not know offhand what the part was when I showed it to him..... They did not touch the bike.. I did.

So I'm the one that left it out.... I have a Clymer manual and it does not show that part anywhere in the book... I also looked at all the parts fiches at Direct Line parts and didn't see it... so when I went to pick up new mounted tire and rebuilt clutch pack from the dealer (really its a repair shop that mainly deals in Wings and Hondas) I took the part with me... He couldn't Identify it....They did a fine job on both tire and clutch as the clutch tabs were properly aligned and it slid right in once I got the splines to line up. It wasn't until I had put it all together that i got some correct answers here.... I have been without the Valk for 2 months.. last ride was Mothers DAY!!!!

So after all this I got to thinking... maybe this strainer was not originally on some of the early Valks that did have the rivet trouble.. as with the strainer in place the rivets can not block the oil passage as some people have reported when the damper did go bad and lose the rivets.. many people have noted that after 2000, there has been little or no trouble with the rivets and the damper failing.....

I'm thinking that this part was added in 99-2000 to prevent the blockage issue and thats why its is not in my Clymer manual...... It might also explain why he did not recognize the part....

Any thoughts???  As this is just a SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) on my part.....

At this point I am going to leave it out until at least the next oil change... I don't think there is much of a chance of the new clutch going bad- especially the damper as the original one I replaced was still in good shape..... But I will need to most likely have a new gasket on hand when I do decide to do it... if at all...

Never mind I just answered my own questions.. that part is on the parts fiche for a 97.... rear case....

So its always been in the bikes......

So how did the rivets clog the oil passage??!?!?!?

Problem is that filter keeps all the junk that comes off the clutch in the rear case. Without it stuff can run into the crankcase of the motor where it can damage the motor. The oil pump can suck the trash up and damage the pump as the oil filter for the motor is down stream from the pump.

I ordered a new gasket..... will probably put the strainer in next oil change..

As far as the strainer itself.. It is not a filter... you can pretty much see right thru it..... Its most likely mainly there to keep and big pieces out if there is a major failure(rivets, etc), but small stuff coming off the clutch from everyday use.... tiny particles will go right thru... so its not a "filter" as such.. more like the drain cover in your tub/shower....

I also wonder if its there to help settle the oil before it goes back to the sump after it has been splashed around in the clutch area.....

I know that so far the bike runs fine without it, but I will get it back in pretty soon.....

There goes another few hours of non riding..LOL

Rob bought the business from Fran about 7 years ago and moved to a new building.... Rob used to work at Nicholsons in Ann Arbor as the service manager.....

Thanks George...

That might explain why it took him a week to do a clutch pack and mount a tire....

I picked up the tire and clutch last Tuesday.. Rob was the only one there......

Odd....

Will he mount a car tire?
