Wow, this thing has 2 more gears than it needs! I will probably never use 1st gear, it makes the throttle a little tricky on start up and 2nd works just fine.
On that subject, I can't believe some people think the Valkyrie needs a 6th gear. My previous bike I kept as close to 4500 rpm all the time in 4th and 5th gear so as to have some torque for sudden acceleration. This bike is going 90 at 4000 rpm in 5th!

1st gear is a little low. It's like a granny gear in old trucks. Get it moving and shift to second. 6th gear would be a waste. In 5th, you carry enough rpm on the highway for response, and still get great mpg.
Enjoy your ride.

I actually would prefer less of a granny in first and either a sixth gear or taller overdrive. My 84 standard Goldwing has an overdrive and it's amazing how much less fatiguing 2500 rpm is than 3500 up at highway speeds. I wonder if Honda cut corners in this area so they wouldn't have to do any retooling with interchangeable engine/tranny. Having the exact same transmission in a bike 100ish pounds lighter than the F6b just feels a little...off. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing motorcycle. Just feels like it could be dialed in a little more specifically in this area.

If they changed the ratio on 1st we wouldn't have a 0 to 60 time of 3.3 and to me sometimes when you start in 2nd you lug the engine. I kind of agree at the top end though because I would like to see slightly less in the rpm.

I tried that a couple times...nah...too much clutch sliding... doesn't feel right... I am pretty sure, although not a big deal, isn't all that good for the bike.

Lol, I would settle for a 4 second 0-60 to not have to shift out of first at 12 mph.

I agree that starting out in 2nd doesn't feel right... it's just a bit too high. However, doing so will definitely NOT hurt anything. I've ridden several bikes that have a MUCH higher first gear (close to the Goldwing's 2nd). Neither of them ever had a clutch problem, including a BMW R1200 with a dry clutch, known to easily run 200K + miles without opening the engine.

You can actually start out in 3rd without lugging, but 2nd feels better.

I only did it as a test, but with a wet clutch does it really do that much harm?

Geez, 1st gear second gear, who cares. It's all good when you got the Valkyrie between your legs.

It puts stress on not only the entire drive train...but the motor as well... I wouldn't do it man...One can actually FEEL the groan...for me anyway, in second...necessitating a more aggressive clutch slip.. 3rd gear? FORGET about it!

Most of the times, unless some Harley or other hot rod is next to me , and need to be show that YA this bike can GO, I start out in 1st. Then go right to 3rd, then 5th. On the weekend rides cruising through smaller towns, unless we drop below 35 MPH , I dont even have to down shift, like others, just roll the throttle and back to 55-60 in a hurry...... Maybe because I dont need to accelerate like a rocket, just enjoy the ride, and bike, I get like 45+ miles per gallon, and thats on plain regular gas....... just love this bike......

Most other bikes I ride with have to down shift to 3rd or even 2nd, as long as you dont give it full throttle and just ROLL it up, it does fine , no lugging at all. If that is not your thing then ok, shift to 4th, or down to 3rd for the next 10 MPH. I like to keep my feet up, out on the hwy pegs.
