What does the data say?

Corinth, Texas

« on: September 26, 2009, 06:40:49 PM »

About 18 months ago I switched from a car tire to a MC tire.  The reason was expedience.  I needed a tire THAT SATURDAY and didn't have time to make arrangements for a new DS tire.

I missed it though and today I went back:

The Honda dealer tried their best to convince me that my car tire caused premature wear on my rear-end.  I think 87,500 miles wore the gears out.

I've got about 50k on, about 20k of which was put on with a car tire.  My hub spines and the splines on the end of my drive shaft still look like new.

Looking at all the posts here and on the Delphi Valk forum, I can't discern any particular pattern to the drive train failures.  It sure doesn't seem like darksiders are over-represented in the incident rate.

A few of the darksiders are not pulling the rearend down about 1/2 way through a car tire for an inspection.

Pull apart is almost mandatory at 10k.  Life of a normal bike tire...........

So, if I'm getting 15K on a bike tire, I should be pulling it at 10?

And, yes, I often do get 15K out of my Avon rears, 30K out of the fronts.

What do you mean by "pull down"?  Remove the wheel and inspect the wheel and output splines, or take the final drive off and look at the driveshaft end, too?  I presume that does NOT include disassembly of the final drive unit or going further up the driveshaft?
Thanks,
Jeff

I've been greasing my splines every 10K since I purchased the bike but the previous owner didn't do any maintenance as far as I can tell.  The first time I changed the gear oil it drained out thicker than honey with a lovely metallic sheen to it.  In hind-sight, I should have pulled the driveshaft at that time and inspected it.

I just changed my rear drive oil for the first time and it was still in pretty good shape.
