I just purchased a metzeler front tire off eBay, price was right but I forgot to ask the age befor ordering, well I checked with them and they said it was 23wk of 12 four yrs old already he said it was off the ground in a environmentally controlled room, who knows! It's on the way, should I send it back? What's your take on it, Thanks, Jym...

Sounds like a low volume dealer is trying to unload some older stock. Check with Jake Wilson, they currently have some sales going on for tires and they're high volume. I bought one from them last December, a Metz that was less than a year old. Got it at my front door in under a week.

Personally I would not use it. No matter how it was stored, chemicals and oil evaporate from the carcass of the tire. tire will not be as flexible as a new one, and prone to cracking and separation.

I'd run it

4 year old tire is not that old

When I bought this bike it was thirty years old, I did put new rubber on it but not before riding probably too many miles.  One day after it broke in I was doing 70 thinking, how stupid am I, these are thirty year old Yokohama's with probably Japanese air still in them....lol

How long will it take you to put around 15k miles on it?  I changed my front Metz out at 17k with tread still on it but was an old tire re. the date it was made. If you are an annual high mileage rider, you might be OK with it since you'll be changing it within 24 months. As for the rear, when I used to run a m/c tire I used the Metz 200/60-16. Larger tread contact with the road and slightly better ride. Also gave me more miles before having to change.

Generally speaking, I'm with Grumpy. I don't like starting out with a four year old tire on any vehicle, especially a motorcycle.

I spent 20 years working for Goodyear Tire, seen from experience what age does to tires.  We used to discount them at 2 years, after 3 went back for recycling. Corporate learned better to take a loss, than get sued when a semi tire let go.

No expert here all I can say is I do not fool with tires. I get new.  Jake Wilson is where I just bought my front Avon.  Good prices there.
