Installed new timing belts and a 4 degree trigger wheel on my '97 tourer today. WOW what a difference. Idle is so much smoother now and the power is great. Went for a short ride and remembered I had just filled the tank a couple of days ago with regular so cut the ride short and went back home. My question- Can I run this tank of regular or do I need to drain and refill with premium? I recall some post about switching to premium after trigger wheel change to prevent detonation. Thanks in advance for the answer.     John

Either way.
If you burn it avoid lugging the engine.
If you burn it just stop off and top a half tank off with  premium and then you can use either mid grade or premium with your next fill. Most are fine with mid grade, but premium may give better peace of mind because it's the unheard detonations that can also damage.

With the 4 degree, I doubt very much if you will need premium.

I have the 6 degree in mine and I use 97 octane.

No problem.

Just don't lug the engine.

Wind her out and you will be fine.

After 600 miles pull the plugs and inspect them.

IF, you find little aluminum balls attached to the plugs, you need a higher octane.

In Iowa we have Gasohol, I have used that for the past 11 years and 242K + change miles in that time.

I have a 6 degree and have been running regular for 40 thousand miles.
Kind of funny that so many inquire about mpg on a bike with 6 carbs and then spend 20+ cents more for fuel per gallon.
My bike never spark-knocked or pinged with regular lugging it or balls to the wall.

My friend has a 6 deg wheel in his 99 Tourer. He always runs regular in AZ's heat and higher up in the mtns too. No problems.

For your peace of mind maybe just throw a bottle of ocatne booster in the tank.

Just run the tank as is and fill up as usual. Been running a 6° wheel for well over 100k mi. on mostly regular gas, I only run premium when the sidecar is attached.
